Carlisle taxi driver drove drunken woman who abused him to police stationA drunk passenger who yelled racial abuse at her cab driver and refused to hand over the fare was taken on an extra journey – direct to Carlisle’s police HQ.
The late-night journey ended in a court appearance for Michelle Black, 43.
At the city’s magistrates court, Black pleaded guilty to racially harassing cabbie Erkan Eikan and using threatening behaviour towards a police officer.
The court heard how on February 11 the defendant got into a taxi after a night out in Carlisle city centre and asked to be taken to her home in Eldon Drive, Harraby.
She had been drinking in Pippins on Lowther Street, magistrates heard.
Mr Eikan said he thought she seemed drunk.
After he arrived at her home and asked for the £9.60 fare she became abusive.
She yelled racial abusive at him, prompting him to say he would take her to the police station, which he did.
Once at Durranhill Police HQ Black again became abusive, this time towards a female police officer, swearing at her. Black also continued to be abusive towards the taxi driver, the court was told.
Black was then arrested for both offences and the police officer was “appalled at Black’s behaviour” magistrates heard.
Her defence solicitor said it had been a one-off offence and she has no deep-rooted racial prejudices.
She had simply had too much to drink and was not used to it. Black apologised profusely for her behaviour and admitted both people were just doing their jobs, and that she would not have liked to be spoken to like that.
She was placed on a six week 8pm to 8am curfew and given a community order for six-months. She must also pay £85 court costs.
