Cabbies may get training in 'disability awareness'


TAXI drivers could be required to undertake disability awareness training to secure their licence.

The move would mean anyone who currently holds a Hackney Carriage licence with Crawley Borough Council would have to complete a course.

New applicants would also have to be trained.

In September, the council's licensing committee ruled out forcing all Hackney Carriage drivers to convert their cars to take wheelchair users.

But it was identified that drivers would benefit from disability awareness training.

The committee set a target of six months to look at the options.

Now it is weighing them up, with the preferred method being online learning.

Hackney Carriage driver Alan Howard, 65, from Pound Hill, supports the move. He said: "I think the training will be very beneficial, I would welcome it.

"The Government is considering legislation which would require drivers to provide wheelchair access.

"That is something I and the Hackney Carriage Association would oppose. We have always said that having a mixed fleet is the best way to serve disabled passengers."

The licensing committee will make its decision on whether to enforce the training at a meeting tonight (Wednesday).

Best way to keep our saloons, I suspect he means.

You're probably right about his reasons, but, different people have different needs and wants for that matter. I'm inclined to believe that the best way to provide for a very mixed public is to have a mixed fleet of vehicles available for instant hire
