If you have any belief in conspiracy theories try this

HMG get 80% of what you pay per litre
Oil companies make Billions of pounds per year (plus HMG then tax that too)
Car manufacturers are also IC engine builders

None of the three have any real interest in 100mpg IC cars or worse still, non-IC cars like leccy or true hybrids (with no IC engine)

A world without IC engined cars would cause chaos to HMG's income, Oil company shares and render engine plants redundant (electic motors dont need castings or major machine operations like milling/boring/surface grinding, and are already produced)

I can bet that true non-IC are already built and ready, but we wont get them till "they" are ready

Oil companies only make a small profit from their sales of petrol and Diesel, their main profits come from chemicals, fertilisers, plastics, bituman and loads of other products.

You heard of a "loss leader" before.

The discount gets them in. They make £10.00 on the £50.00 Spend and then loose about £3.00 on the Petrol spend. That's a Customer that another Supermarket might otherwise have had.

5p/ltr maybe, not 11%, they wouldnt be able to cover that, if i spent £50 on groceries they make an average of 22% generally (£11) if i then go outside and buy 90ltrs of fuel and save 15p/ltr thats £13.50 so they are running the store and forecourt at a loss.....

Tescos would benefit from selling fuel at a loss by reclaiming VAT

When Tesco did 5p a litre, they stuck the price up by 2p so in reality you were only getting 3p off.
Some of that was offset by the punters with no coupon...

142.9/ltr in Glasgow, Shell stations seem to always be the cheapest here, and if you save up your reward points, you get free fuel vouchers. I just cashed in one for 12 quid. 8)
