drivers who run multi seaters in York , over 4 passengers, want fare and a half

unfortunatly Big Terry of York, a taxi driver, whom I must say is in line for a free Council issue plate shortly, a multi seater, is dead against it, and has logged a complaint to York City Council that it should not go ahead

this would mean vehicles would have to have 2 tarriffs cards, those with 4 seater and those with more seats

your thoughts

Well it's commonplace for mixed fleet areas to allow a premium for bigger vehicles, but this would only apply if the larger capacity was utilised. Thus a premium could be charged for six passengers, but for two people the fare would be the same as for a saloon.

This wouldn't require two tariff cards, all it would need would be something on the tariff card stating what the premium was and when precisely it would apply.

Simples :D

We have this on our tariff card. Rate 1, upto 4 passengers, day rate. Rate 2, upto 4 passengers, night rate. Rate 3, 5-8 passengers, day rate and rate 4, 5-8 passengers, night rate.

One formal objection would mean that the decision to allow a premium for 5+ passengers would be taken by a full council vote instead of being granted by the licensing department. The public intererest is on the side of the premium because vehicles capable of carrying more passengers cost more to buy and run so there needs to be a financial incentive for proprietors to purchase and license them.

For the consumer it is cheaper to pay a premium of 50% for 5+ passengers than to pay double for 2 four-seater saloons.

We applied for the same 50% premium above all other tariffs in 2008 to replace a flat extra charge of £2 for 5+ passengers. Thus, time and half on bank holidays/after midnight until 7 am and double time at Christmas/New Year's Eve also attracted the 50% premium for 5+ passengers on top. This came into effect in April 2009 and AFAIK, there have been no complaints received in respect of this premium by members of the public.

State your case. Write to the licensing department and as many councillors as possible including the chair of the licensing committee.

You are welcome to cite our example.

why shouldnt they, the alternative is to book 2 x 4 seaters, many WAV's are 5/6/7 seaters, so by insisting all hacks are WAV's the side effect is that the public get cheap 5/6/7 seaters? is that fair?

by having extra rates for extra passengers the hacks are being compensated for having to buy WAV's which rarely see a wheelchair job

We've had this here for a few years now. It worked quite well for a while.

Drawbacks? There are a couple.

They do take up more rank space.
There are only so many jobs to go round. When hires are doubled up in this way, it means fewer jobs for everyone when things are quiet.
We have so many now, I find it hard to believe the extra cost is worth the extra expense. There are only so many multi seat jobs.
Quite a few guys have gone back to 4 seaters.

There are complaints of overcharging by a handful of drivers setting the meter to fare and a half when they shouldn't.

We have had meter and a half for 5+ for many years, and it's works ok.

Except for the increasing number of drivers who can't count the number of passengers getting into their cabs.

They seem to think that 1/2/3/4 is actually 5. [-X

There are the few who are charging fare and a half already, we also have a race day tarrfif which states on the fare chart for journeys to or from the racecourse, however we still hear horror stories of the certain few who charge it on race days where ever the journey
