You miss the rather large elephant in the room which is London.....the bastion of the free market - there's more illegal hirings there than anywhere else.

So restricting London taxi numbers will improve the touting situation? :?

I didnt say that....I merely pointed to it still occurring and I agree with what 187sums stated, people seem to believe the hype that delimitation stops illegal plying.....it doesnt.

Isn't that obvious.

If more vehicles are licensed to pick up from the street then less illegal hirings will take place.

However ridding the world of taxi quotas doesn't mean illegal hirings wont take place, just fewer will.

Yes, which is why no one was actually ever silly enough to make the point that you and 187ums are now claiming was made.

Now you're quoting the OFT as saying:

OFT wrote:
making journeys safer – removing quantity restrictions and increasing the number of licensed taxis will reduce the need for illegal taxis where neither the driver or vehicle have been subject to appropriate quality and safety checks. Last year around 1.8 million people used an illegal taxi, exposing themselves to potentially serious safety risks

And indeed the bit you ironically highlight demonstrates that your argument is wrong. I can't be bothered going back up to the top of the thread, but if you read the above carefully then you'll see that it's not quite the same as you and 187ums were claiming earlier.

The key word is probably 'reduce'. Not stop. Just reduce.

That'll work.....have a chat.

The most heavily regulated taxi sector in the world as regards quality control is the 'bastion of the free market'?

Hardly.

anyone can enter and to do so the driver must be highly qualified.....is that what you want the provincial taxi trade to aspire to?

ok lets forget about the supposed plate premiums for a minute, when you guys are presented with cold hard facts about your ideal free for all scenario - you cant take it - the truth hurts, yet you cling to some fantasy that everything will be ok, the fact is some of you are in a permanent state of denial

So you mean it wasn't your erroneous claim above that was the fantasy?

Talk about trying to change the subject. Again. :D

I can take it.

But I'm still waiting for those cold hard facts.

The PH trade has never had quotas, so why has it overtaken the hackney trade in terms of punters moved from A to B?
