What is a private hire operator licence?

A private hire operator licence is required to enable a person to accept or invite bookings for private hire vehicles.

Quote:
One person can be licensed and employ/sub-contract an unlimited number of licensed vehicles. However, a licensed private hire driver cannot accept any bookings unless he either holds or works for a licensed private hire operator. An operator may pass a booking to another licensed private hire vehicle operator provided that the operator is also licensed by Woking Borough Council.

Before a private hire operator licence is granted, the applicant must satisfy the Council that the address from which they intend to operate is suitable and, where applicable, satisfy any conditions that may be attached to the licence in order not to disturb the ambience of the area.

How do I qualify for a private hire operator licence?

Anyone who wishes to accept pre-booked hirings must hold a private hire operator licence.

What if you are driving someone else's car?

Or indeed your own car but under an operator other than yourself?

But I suspect 'youbeenbusy' is simply referring to when a driver wants to work by himself rather than the more normal scenario.

I don't think there's anything stopping a PH working under two or more different operators' licences, except for the operators themselves.

If you worked for "ABC" cabs as a driver then you are working for an operator, but you as a driver still need to have a operators licence according to our LA. Every PH driver has to have one.

So which LA is that?

You're saying that every owner-driver has three licences?

If a driver is driving for another vehicle proprietor - ie not his own vehicle - are you saying he needs a PH op's licence as well?

Applying your LA's logic he would need a PHV proprietor's licence as well, even if it wasn't his vehicle.

I do not think i am getting this across properly.
I drive for "ABC" cabs i have my own car and i drive it . At renewal time i have to fork out for
A badge
A operators licence
A vehicle licence.

Even though the company i work for has a operators licence i also need to have one aswell .

If at renewal time i apply for a badge only with no car, i am not sure if you need a operators licence.
I would have thought not.

So you're only taking work through 'ABC cabs' and not directly to yourself?

You're not getting work directly to yourself as well as through 'ABC cabs'?

Which LA did you say it was again?

are you a:-
car owner renting a radio/datahead
just a driver (non owner) or
an autonomous independent operator advertising your number for work off the public?

or any 2 from 3?

Ask your council why you need an operator's license, if you are working with an operator that already has one.

Interesting that all private hire drivers requires an operator's licence. Don't the operator(s) you work for, i.e. ABC cabs in this case worry that you're take their customers away from them (and every operator in your LA)?.

I sub-contract for a few companies, but I don't need to tell them I also have an operators license because of that reason - though I don't "steal" their customers away from them (I could), if I get found out it's not going to look good.

Ask your council what they do about drivers/owners that live outside the licensing area.
