Man arrrested and charged with murder after Iranian taxi driver is found stabbed near playpark

A TAXI driver has been stabbed to death just yards from a playpark.

Police found Ebrahim Aryaei Nekoo, 41, badly wounded in Saughton Park, Edinburgh, shortly after 7am on Saturday.

The private hire cabbie, originally from Iran, later died from his injuries.

Fellow drivers last night said there had recently been a spate of robberies on taxis.

One said: “It was only a matter of time before a driver was killed.

“We’re now terrified that we could be next. It’s enough to make you consider whether the job is worthwhile. No job is worth risking your life for.”

Last night, Lothian and Borders Police arrested and charged a man with Ebrahim’s murder.

The 47-year-old suspect is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

Ebrahim lived in the capital with his wife Mitra. They are believed to have a young son.

Local residents, who live near the park, spoke of their shock at the murder.

Isobel Bird said: “It’s so sad. I knew it was something serious when I saw the police tape go up.

“That path is really quiet but it can be a scary place at night.

“There are all sorts of dodgy goings on and I wouldn’t walk up there alone in the dark.”

Yesterday, the children’s playpark was packed with youngsters and their parents and children enjoying the sun.

One mum, Marie Broughton, 23, of Dalry, said the incident had shocked her.

She added: “It does make you worry about the park but I would still bring my children here. It is safer during the day.”

Chief Inspector Richard Thomas, leading the murder inquiry, said: “Crimes of this nature remain extremely rare.

“But when they do arise, it can be of great concern to our local communities and it is important that we respond appropriately.

“High-visibility patrols will continue in the Saughton Park area”

Meanwhile police have appealed to dog walkers or anyone else who was in the park on Saturday morning to come forward.

I wonder how long it will be before someone on the Edinburgh forum says something along the lines of 'I bet that was an illegal pick up'.

Shame the police waited until a driver was killed before they dealt with all these attacks properly.

It's a strange one this chances of being an illegal pick up in this area are ziltch as most would phone private hire anayway.

stories doing the rounds up here have the press way off the mark and nothing to do with robberies.

Not much you can say when the details are not known.

Except of course to say how appalling it is for anyone to lose their life at the hands of another.

Revealed: Iranian taxi driver found dying in park had been run over

A TAXI driver found dying near a playpark had been run over, the Record can reveal.

A fellow cabbie has been charged with the murder of private hire driver Ebrahim Aryaei Nekoo.

Dad Ebrahim was found with serious injuries in Edinburgh’s Saughton Park on Saturday morning and later died.

Police arrested the driver of a black cab after the incident.

He appeared in court yesterday as Ebrahim’s family paid tribute to the 41-year-old, originally from Iran.

His wife Mobina Jafari said: “Ebrahim was a warm and devoted husband who I adored and who was well liked within our close group of friends.

“Everyone who knew and cared for him is completely shocked and devastated by his death and we are all still trying to come to terms with this tragedy.”

A postmortem was being carried out yesterday and a black cab was taken in for forensic testing by police.

Ebrahim, known to neighbours and friends as Alex, had lived nearby with Mobina.

His boss Kevin Hanratty, director of Capital Cars, said: “He was a valued and well-liked driver and, above all, a pleasant and friendly, family-orientated guy.”

Stephen Nolan, 47, appeared on petition at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday in connection with Ebrahim’s death.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

The case was continued for further examination.

Well, we're soon gonna get to know what this guy's previous is. Anyone happen to know? And if it transpires that police checks failed, or councillors made a wrong decision when warnings were clear?

From what I've heard there seems little chance that this case will be downgraded to manslaughter.

Perhaps those who think they're the dogs borlocks in our trade, and that they're owed a living, and they are somehow superior, and they can get away with .... will realise that they're not, and won't.

And I'll say it now, isn't it long overdue for the council to create the equal playing field that everyone has a right to compete in, that isn't the preserve of the vested interests that some thugs in our trade feed off?

The council has sowed the differences, it's now time for it to eradicate them.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter any of the politics or the other nonsense all it boils down to is that a wife and son have lost a husband and father. I'm sure the details will come out in the fullness of time so please guys can the sideshow. If anyone hears of a collection for the drivers family please post the details up here

Just for the record, briefly, there was an altercation between the drivers. The PHC then tailgated the taxi after leaving the garage (witnessed.) They then proceeded to a park area where events took a nasty turn.

The campaign to show the deceased as a sweet family man is slightly tainted by the fact that, for some reason, he carried a rather large knife in his phc and intended to use it on the other driver. Perhaps different cultures and different ideas on what is acceptable?

In a panic the taxi drove off with either the phc driver throwing himself in front of it in an effort to stop it or the cabbie deliberately driving over him. Take your pick.

How would you react to a knife threat? To his credit when it was realised that injuries were more serious than first thought the cabbie called the police himself. At no time did he try to hide anything.

Are these the actions of a cold-blooded killer or just a guy who was out of his depth when threatened with a knife? This is an incident that escalated out of a triviality and should be a lesson to us all.

If the above is true, then the driver wouldn't have been charged with what he was charged with.

So maybe, and only time will tell, it's not true.
