Taxi drivers in North Yorkshire to help tackle crime

Taxi drivers in North Yorkshire are being asked to join a scheme to help tackle crime in the area.

Taxi Watch will give drivers across Scarborough, Filey and Whitby direct contact with the borough council's CCTV operation to report incidents.

Taxi drivers will be able to become the "eyes and ears of the town" raising any concerns they may have.

Brian Hall, a taxi driver, said the scheme would not only ensure the public's safety but drivers' too.

The volunteer scheme asks drivers to report any issues they come across, from drunken fighting to concerns over a vulnerable person alone on the street.

Wayne Casey, from the National Taxi Association, said the scheme was a good idea

"Anything the cab and private hire trade can do to help people out is good," he said.

"Anything we can do to improve the safety of cab drivers and reduce the number of violent assaults on cab drivers should be welcomed with open arms."

But Nick Pickles, from Big Brother Watch, said: "Taxi drivers are not police officers. If there is a problem in these town centres it needs to get sorted out.

"If we've lost control of the streets shouldn't we be asking why?

"If something happened before cabbies could ring 999, so what we're doing now is saying rather than just the serious stuff, tell us anything of interest."

Interesting the moronic simpleton mentions a time before Telephones......then maybe he would remember the days when the Police didn't have radios. They blew a whistle and 9 out of 10 times it would be a Taxi driver came to their aid, especially of an evening.

Yet another spurious "Big Brother" argument that the public have no civil duty of care to others!!!! These people need some bloody education on what Civil Liberty ACTUALLY means.

Yeah in the times a copper would help the cabby in return, plus it was an era where you didn't have to look the other way incase you ended up the one in court for helping out.

Let me give you a little story that happened to me a few years ago.

I used to go to a club after I'd left the pub, I knew all the staff and was quite good friends with some of them, one night a fight broke out and the layout of the club meant the doormen had to leave the floor unattended to root out the perp, while they were doing this another fight broke out, a 4 man ruck, so like I have many times before I help out and break it up, nothing is said that week and I go home as normal, a bit miffed tbh that a drink wasn't offered as this is protocol when a friend helps you, the next week I'm barred, I ask why and get told about last week, so I say ask the barman who thanked me for the assistance (he was the only one btw) oh he's not working tonight and you're still barred, and you looked like you were enjoying it as you were in the middle of it all, well how I'm supposed to get 4 blokes apart without being in the middle of it is beyond me, so I take my ban, a year later friends ask me if I would ask to be let in again, answer is no, management decision it seems, so I tell the doorman who gives me the rolleyes......ok, but if you are getting a pasting one night and I drive by and don't help you know why don't you, I had a drink in my hand 3 minutes later, got banned again a few mths later, this time outside, one of those nice gangsta gents decided he was going to enforce oral sex on my little mate, only he was looking my way as he said it so I thought he was talking to me, another all mouth image once the plate was offered to him, so, until the PC gang arrived in life people would help each other, but in the world of today they won't, and me, I'm going to walk straight on by next time and if the doorman ends up dead, tough [edited by admin] you don't get to pick and choose when someone is useful anymore, so how about that, twice I defended the innocent and twice I paid for it, have a nice life and hope you don't need to call 13 anytime in the future, cos the help you thought was there may not be for much longer.

C.C your comment "damned sexy voice" worries me. Is this your way of telling us you are "on the wrong bus" ?
