First Minister cleared over hospitality bills

Published on 9 April 2012

ALEX Salmond has complied fully with Freedom of Information requests over his private hospitality after claims records were being 'systematically' destroyed, the Nationalists said yesterday.

The First Minister's spokesman was responding to reports that details of everyone who enjoyed the SNP private hospitality were deleted within 72 hours.

It was claimed this was done once security staff no longer required them.

The report followed Mr Salmond's decision last week to launch an inquiry into his own conduct after he treated a series of SNP donors, including Ayrshire's £161 million lottery winners Colin and Christine Weir, to tea at Bute House.

The Weirs gave the SNP a record £1m donation four days after meeting Salmond at his official residence in September. But as they had tea rather than lunch, dinner or drinks, their names were not recorded in official hospitality registers.

Mr Salmond's spokesman said: "We are pleased that the Information Commissioner finds that we complied in full with our Freedom of Information requirements, which concludes the matter.

"Of course, this is entirely consistent with the practice of previous administrations, whether it be the Labour/Lib Dem coalition or Tory Scottish Secretaries.

"However, in the case of the SNP administration, no donor events and nothing associated with party fund-raising take place in Bute House – never has and never will.

Everyone receiving hospitality at government events at Bute House is recorded."

Cash for policies

SNP Westminster candidate Calum Cashley has posted sketchy details of a few Labour Party donations juxtaposed with coincident facts which presumably he thinks make them look dodgy.

Whether groundless or not, such veiled accusations can give the impression of squeaky cleanness on the part of the accuser, and therein lies their primary purpose (cf. Angus MacNeil).

It won’t wash. For example, in a January 2000 article about Clause 28 for the Sunday Mail, Peter Tatchell wrote: “Brian Souter, millionaire boss of Stagecoach, wants to buy political influence”.

He may very well say that. I couldn’t possibly comment!

The SNP’s 2003 Holyrood manifesto (196Kb PDF) included an unequivocal commitment to “bring forward legislation to allow the regulation of buses”. And a motion passed at the SNP’s conference in October 2006 said that “the SNP recognises the failures of bus deregulation across Scotland and reiterates its support for re-regulation of Scotland's buses”.

Just five months later, on 17 March 2007, Brian Souter (pictured above) donated £300,000 to the SNP. Souter is of course a vociferous critic of bus re-regulation, but the following day SNP deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon said that his donation had come “with no strings attached”. On 8 April, a further £200,000 donation was registered with the Electoral Commission.

Then when the SNP’s Holyrood manifesto was published on 12 April, their re-regulation policy was unexpectedly and very noticeably absent.

The Sunday Herald reported on 22 April that “an SNP source close to party leader Alex Salmond” said the policy had been dropped at some point during the preceding “few months”.

Mark Ballard, Green Party speaker on Transport, said at the time: “I'm very concerned that when Brian Souter's cash appeared in the SNP bank account, the commitment to re-regulating the bus network almost immediately disappeared from their manifesto. At best this is a downgrading of a vital policy. At worst it could be cash for policies.”

Again, his words, not mine. But perhaps Mr Cashley could add this little episode to his list.

SNP tax is ‘can of writhing worms’

The SNP has been accused of an “unprecedented cover-up” after it emerged the party was using public money to prevent details of its local income tax plan being made public.

The Scottish Government has applied to the Court of Session on two occasions to prevent a document on the financial implications of the tax being released under freedom-of-information (FoI) legislation.

Opposition leaders accused First Minister Alex Salmond of trying to conceal the truth until after the election because of the impact on struggling households.

One described the SNP’s proposals to replace the council tax as a “can of writhing worms”.

A local income tax was one of the SNP’s main manifesto pledges in the run-up to the 2007 election.

Following an announcement two years later by Finance Secretary John Swinney that it was being shelved because of lack of parliamentary support and changing financial circumstances, a Scottish journalist asked under FoI legislation for details of the financial implications of the proposed tax.

Ministers blocked the release of the papers and took the issue to the Court of Session. Following a lengthy legal debate, the papers were handed over to Scottish information commissioner Kevin Dunion.

Mr Dunion ruled that the document should be released in the public interest because it would “contribute significantly to public understanding” of the policy and also its viability for helping to raise enough money for council services.

However, Mr Salmond lodged another appeal with the Court of Session, effectively blocking release until after the May election.

Labour leader Iain Gray said the documents must be “hugely damaging” to the SNP flagship policy.

“This is an orchestrated and unprecedented cover-up by Alex Salmond and the SNP to conceal the truth during an election campaign about how their tax plans will hammer hard-working Scottish families,” he said.

Tory leader Annabel Goldie said: “You don’t block good news. There is a can of writhing worms that Alex Salmond is going to extraordinary lengths to keep a lid on.”

Green co-convener Patrick Harvie said: “It’s no wonder Alex Salmond wants the embarrassing details locked away in a filing cabinet so the public can’t see what a shambles the SNP’s tax policy is.”

An SNP spokeswoman said the issue was not about local tax policy but whether advice to ministers should fall within the scope of FoI legislation.

The Scottish Government confirmed ministers had appealed Mr Dunion’s decision at the Court of Session and it would be inappropriate to comment pending a decision. A spokeswoman for Mr Dunion said he would be defending his decision to release the papers.

Almost nine in 10 viewers polled thought Mr Salmond won the first televised debate of the election campaign on Tuesday, according to a survey. It found 87% thought the first minister won the debate. Ms Goldie was second with 7%, while 5% backed Mr Gray and 1% Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott.

More duplicity I guess gus.

Scottish Independence: SNP attempts to gain from the cash for access fiasco

The SNP is demanding referendum assurances over fundraising on the back of the recent cash for honours scandal at Westminster involving Peter Cruddas.

SNP MP Angus MacNeil has said that the scandal underlined why Westminster must not be permitted to dictate terms on Scotland’s independence referendum.

"The tightest rules on spending must be set in Scotland by the Scottish Parliament," said MacNeil. "Otherwise, we will find Tories like Peter Cruddas raising money from Liechtenstein to attempt to buy the poll."

A newspaper report claimed last week that former treasurer Peter Cruddas was willing to receive political donations from individuals supposedly representing an overseas wealth fund. UK law forbids overseas funds from handing out donations to political parties.

MacNeil said that Cruddas, the fundraiser for the Conservatives, was “already lining up with David Cameron against the Scottish referendum”.

First Minister Alex Salmond meanwhile, has written to Cameron saying the cash for honours fiasco involving Cruddas is a “matter of substantial public concern” and has asked for the details of the discussion he had with Cruddas that related to Scottish independence.

I doubt you will find the outcome of the P&J story. Rest assured, if it were true you would have heard plenty more about it.
A year on, Mr Gray and Ms Goldie have both departed their posts. Their replacements are TBH inept lightweights.
The Scottish media, much of it under English control, continues the Unionist fight on their behalf.

The Scottish media, including BBC Scotland, love any story, no matter how inaccurate, that shows the SNP or independence in a bad light.
They rarely ever admit they got it wrong and on the rare occasions when they do admit it, they don't give the admission anything like the same prominence.
They are partisan, and as such the scottish people are begining to realise it.
