Taxi drivers facing call on surcharges

Councillors in Aberdeen will be asked to consider action to stop taxi drivers of larger vehicles overcharging passengers.

Drivers who operate bigger taxis are allowed to impose a 50% surcharge on parties of five people or more.

Representatives from the Unite union told a meeting of the city’s taxi consultation group that the rule was being abused in some cases, with smaller groups being hit with the extra fee.

They appear to have been calling for an end for a while;

I think, in these recession hit times, charging the higher rate when only one or two punters get in, is quite commonplace.

Most certainly is down here. :sad:

Aint heard of it here. Reading through the reports there doesnt appear to have been many (if any) complaints.....seems to me its a load of p*ssed off saloon drivers......although I'm quite sure the owners of the larger vehicles would willingly swap them for saloon cars?

Surcharge should be per arse not %, here it's 20p per butt that gets in over 4 iirc, which is fair imo, extra weight extra car cost offset, but to make a £10 fare go £15 is unfair imo, which makes it all the more important to have a proper fair regulated fare structure in place from the off with both HC and PH,

Locally we have PH that in a few years time wioll be cheaper than a bus, if this continues then of course drivers will overcharge to compensate, it's already happening tbh, they charge what they think you won't argue with which is generally 50p to a quid more than the poverty card says.

Used to be that here until a few years ago.

Fare and a half for 5 or more isn't really the issue, most people still see it as better value than paying for 2 taxis.
Problem is the handful of bandits who charge fare and a half when they shouldn't.

Then either caputure them or remove the tariff?

If drivers are caught abusing the fare and a half they should have their taxi license taken away. That might stop them!
