This is developing into a bit of a sh*tstorm;

Tuesday 24 April 2012

Dudley MP and co-chair of the Parliamentary cycling Group Ian Austin has table the following questions about the government’s relationship with cab company Addison Lee.

1. To ask the Secretary of State for Transport to set out the details of any contracts between his department and Addison Lee?

2. To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether, in light of the instructions issued by the Chairman of Addison Lee to his staff to ignore the law and use bus lanes, this department will review and terminate any contracts with the company?

3. To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office whether he will compile and publish the details of any contracts held by government departments with Addison Lee?

4. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his Department considers drivers working for Addison Lee to be employed or self-employed.

5. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what criteria his department use to determine whether a worker is employed or self-employed.

6. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what criteria his Department use to determine whether a worker is employed or self-employed, and what assessment his Department makes of the applicability of those criteria to drivers working for Addison Lee.

7. To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills what controls are in place to ensure that drivers working for Addison Lee receive the National Minimum Wage.

yep....he's created a sh*tstorm.....even if the answers amount to little....the wider reaching implications will be with HMRC.

Calling it a shitstorm is being rather tepid, I'd call it a fall out of cataclysmic proportions.

I agree, but those drivers are not self-employed, despite what the spiv says.

It may create a kerfuffle, but this trade needs to get away from outdated practices, and drivers (some not all) need the protection of employment law i.e. paid holidays, sickness, pensions etc.

That could decimate the trade particularly the PH trade although i suspect there will be ways found around it

which trade would it decimate? not mine, it would have the effect of PH having to charge proper prices.

It would mean drivers working sensible hours and getting paid sensible money.

How much longer can we go on working 60/70/80+ hours a week for less than minimum wage?

It's got to stop.

And of ensuring that PH operators don't flood their circuits with vehicles, unless they have work for them.

I wonder how many vehicles Delta would have if the drivers on that circuits were employed? :-k

and quite rightly too......such a move would benefit both trades......except the operators, who appear to be happy in London at losing 1/3rd of all licensees each renewal.....just lower standards and make the pool deeper.
