Cab driver raids cashless passenger's fridge

A Sydney man believes he got the better of a Sydney taxi driver who raided his fridge in lieu of a $27 fare.

Robert Ward had his kitchen cleaned out yesterday when he could not pay the $27 fare for the ride from Ultimo to Bellevue Hill.

Mr Ward had no cash on him and had forgotten his PIN, leaving him with no way to pay his bill.

But the cab driver refused to leave empty-handed.

"We sat in the taxi and he said, 'have you got any cans of fruit or veg or anything?'," Mr Ward told Nine News.

The pair then went into Mr Ward's home where the driver helped himself to cheese and crackers.

"I think he was quiet disappointed," Mr Ward said.

"I hadn't just been shopping."

But the driver collected a few items before returning to his taxi.

Mr Ward thinks he got a good deal out of the bizarre barter.

"There was no way he had $27 worth of food," Mr Ward said.

Years ago I read of an American taxi driver who would 'buy' items for the cost of the fare.

If someone couldn't pay he would buy their TV for example for the amount of the fare, issue them with a receipt and say he would return the TV the following day when they had the fare. However when he goes back he asks for a much higher amount than he bought it for, so if the fare was $10 he'd offer to sell the TV back for $100, either ending up with the $100 or a cheap telly. Nothing could be done, after all the TV belonged to the driver and he had the receipt to prove it !
