Hi, please could i ask for help/guidance in regards to taxi ranks? Our rank is to undergo a change and it will bring the number of spaces to 6 from 3 but we will lose our "holding Bay " which holds 12 taxis which procede to the rank as another departs. One of the smaller companys are trying to get the council to make a ruling that at any one time there should only be two of any one company on there. I thought though whilst on a rank each driver is an "independant" as any work got of there is "earned" and not given through the controller. Is there any other LAs that have this condition or have we just got an unfair one?

I would think such a rule would be illegal.

A council cannot stipulate the % of cabs from each firm that sits on a rank.

How on earth could such a policy be enforced?

A taxi in his licensing area can sit on a rank if there is space, any other rule is illegal.

Cheers for all responses. I did not think they could do it and i am prepared to fight any decision that is detrimental to any driver.

I think that you should point out to them that they are halving the number of spaces so queing up on double yellows at the back of the rank will follow and the only way a rank can work is first come first served any other policy is unenforcable and against competition rules

They should provide you with an emergency rank while your normal one is undergoing renovations.
