Cab driver is a poor advert for his trade

WHAT sort of person forces a mum and her sick child to stop and pay a £90 charge before taking them on to hospital?

Toddler Destiny Onyeizu had been sick on his mum's clothes as they travelled in a taxi to Bristol Children's Hospital.

The driver had no way of knowing how seriously ill Destiny was.

His condition could have been a matter of life or death.

And yet he stopped and delayed the journey by half an hour while Destiny's mum waited for someone to bring her the money he demanded.

He should have simply kept on driving and made sure Destiny and his mum got to hospital as quickly as possible.

He should have told Destiny's mum not to worry about the fare let alone demand a ludicrously high bill for what amounted to a few sprays of air freshener.

Had he behaved like that she would have had only praise for him.

As it is she will now always see all taxi drivers in a different light.

This driver has done nothing but bring shame upon his trade.

He was not dealing with a drunken lout, just a little boy who was ill and a desperate mum in need of help and compassion.

If the child is that ill then we have an ambulance service for that, tell me where it says we are responsible for ppl that appear without the means to pay, there is absolutely no way I would do this trip without muf either and if the newspaper is that concerned then perhaps they'd like to sponsor everyone in need and hope they cpome good with the cash eventually.

I will say if the kid had sicked on mum and not the car he's not entitled to charge for clean up, and tbh you'd make an exception in this case anyway if you had a brain.

Anger of sick toddler's mother over cabbie's demand for bill

A TAXI driver taking a sick toddler to hospital halted the journey after the 17-month-old passenger vomited in his cab.

The child's mother Udo Nwogu claims the driver taking her for an emergency visit to Bristol Children's Hospital refused to go any further until he was paid a £90 cleaning charge.

She told the cabbie that her son Destiny was suffering from dehydration and urgently needed to be seen by a doctor.

But the driver only agreed to complete the journey when the charge was paid – leading to a 30-minute delay in getting the boy to hospital.

Mrs Nwogu has made a formal complaint about the driver's conduct to Bristol City Council.

She believes the driver should have driven her poorly son to hospital as a priority and worried about any damage to the taxi's interior afterwards.

Destiny, who had a raised temperature and fever, vomited as he and his mother travelled to hospital from their home in Old Market on the evening of April 24.

Mrs Nwogu, 32, who is married to Chika and also has an 11-week-old baby called Fidel, had taken him to A&E on April 22 and a doctor advised her by phone to bring him in again as he had diarrhoea and vomiting.

She said: "I left my 11-week-old baby with a neighbour and we went in a taxi. A minute later, Destiny vomited all over me.

"The driver stopped the taxi and I said, 'Can you please take me to the hospital? My son is very sick'.

"He said he wasn't going to move until he was paid."

As she did not have enough cash with her, Mrs Nwogu telephoned one of her neighbours and asked him to bring her some money to pay the cleaning charge.

But by the time he had arrived and paid the driver, there had been a delay of 30 minutes in getting Destiny to hospital.

Mrs Nwogu said: "He should have thought about the money later and got us to hospital. What was he going to do if my child had died in the car? I was crying all the way through it – it was so painful.

"If you have blood running through you, you should be sensible when dealing with children. It wasn't a lot of money and I would have paid it."

The driver was working for Bristol Cabot Taxis, based in Stapleton Road, Easton. But he had only been with the company for one week and has since left.

The company's owner, Mohamed Omer, said the self-employed driver had been given customer service training by the firm but had chosen to ignore it.

Mr Omer declined to name the driver, citing data protection rules, but said: "What he did was absolutely ridiculous. He should have concentrated on providing a service and worried about the money for the damage afterwards.

"Sometimes customers haven't got the money on them and we make an agreement with them. I wasn't happy with him and that's the reason why he left."

Bristol City Council spokesman Pete Wood said: "We can confirm that we are aware of this complaint and are investigating."

Why is it always the poor old driver that cops it, Would a Chemist give out free Medicines without prescriptions, would a shop give out any goods if a child needed something without being paid first....

The Driver was not a Medical expert, that why we have Doctors and Ambulances and even Volunteers...so why should this guy be ostracised for being put in a position not of his making.

Maybe when the Kid was sick the driver should have stopped and called an Ambulance or a Doctor...and how bloody long would that have taken before either or arrived.

In these days of Claim chasers the last thing any driver would want is the responsibility of having someone becoming Ill in their vehicle...they may well be sued.

Nope...Not the Drivers fault, he's not a charity...if anyones to blame its the p1ss poor state of the NHS emergency services, a Doctor should have done an emergency home visit..

Of course if the vehicle was a PH Mr Omer would be the person the lady had the contract with?

The thing is he made a judgement call and got it wrong he was a new driver and therefore inexperienced but surely a call to base might have given him some good advice
