The reason for this thread is that there is a school of though here that the further the punter wants to go the lower the mileage charge should be to encourage these hirings.

But the further you go the further dead milage and time you have coming back to be able to pick up another fare.either hackney or PH.

It is a bit of an open ended question!

If the place is banging International match/Concert then some will charge quite a bit more! if it is a quiet Tuesday when it is spot the seagull cos no one Or most certainly very few people are out then you have to be sensible.

The general measure down here is £2 per mile - to a degree you have to look at the 2/3/400 mile mark, and think in particular it is a middle of the week and realise that the mileage there and back is going to take up your shift!

I would be then looking at 1) How long is the job going to take me there and back i.e hours 2) I do roughly 30 to the gallon, so cost my fuel + any toll money, and would be happy to clear £30 per hour.

I did a once in a decade job back about 3 years ago on a Thursday night, Cardiff to Rochdale, I think it was around 210/215 miles+ return say 425 miles in total. The charge was £360 minus fuel around (3 years ago) £68.................basically clearing £292 minus wear and tear.............I would not have made that on any normal Sunday to Thursday night shift.

Again it depends on your neck of the woods...................the punters down here will go from Hack to Hack & if it does not meet their price...............they will go to a P.H that is only too happy to take them for a lot less because the office had dried up.

You should be getting nearer 60 mpg even over it on a long run.
Thats what my old 130 did and swmbo's new one does

Is that because the tide is near your driveway? :D

I must admit that we quote on a reducing mileage charge but it is so competitive round here that £1 on airport work is the best you'll get with some idiots out there prepared to do 80 to 90p a mile on airports and in general if you quote £2 a mile or more people usually say i'm not paying that

I also use the reducing charge the further the distance method - up to a point. Once the distance reaches the 100-150 mile mark then the price p/m starts to go up again, after all a 400 mile job is a 800 mile round trip.

So a 25 mile job may be x1.8 and a 100 miler x1.5, but a 150 miler would also be x1.5 and the 400 miler x2.

Not questioning your prices as you can charge what you like, but surely the return mileage is the same for four 100 mile jobs at 1.5 as it is for one 400 mile jobs at 2.00. :?

£1 per mile here.

Are you serious?

Does that include the shorter distance jobs of 25 to 75 miles?

£3 for the 1st mile and then £1.20/£1.40 for each mile thereafter for the 25/50 then it would go to £3.00 for the first mile and £1 per mile thereafter, but, there are some that would do it for £1 per mile without the first £3 and some that would do the shorter routes for £1 per mile also. Last night one of the offices had quoted £220 from Wirral to Gatwick airport which is some 508 miles round trip and 8.5 hrs flat out motoring

True but we're talking about four seperate 100 mile jobs as opposed to one 400 miler.

My E7 runs at just below 7 miles to the litre.

That's a ballpark figure of 20p per mile and as you need to account for the fuel for the return journey, regardless of any other considerations, one has to charge a minimum of 40p per mile to cover that.

Consider, also, that the longer journeys will need to include Meal/Rest Breaks and possibly Overnight Accomodation, some of the lower quotes, I've heard, are ludicrous and would leave the Taxi with an Income below the Break-even point.
