Taxi Driver Online

Hi all. New member here. I've looked at the site a couple of times and enjoyed reading a lot of the topics so I thought I'd join up so I can add my considerable lack of knowledge and experience to the forum.

I could use some help/advice regarding setting up an association. I've looked on google for info but can't seem to find anything relevant.

I work on a station rank which has a restricted number of cabs, currently 25. The majority are owner drivers along with a couple of firms who have 3/4 cars on the rank. Until now each driver or operator has dealt directly with the train operating company when it came to renewing their station pass, however the TOC have decided that they want to reduce their admin costs next year by issueing one invoice for all the passes so we need to form an association in order to process this.

We are obviously going to need a bank account, subscriptions*, articles of association, treasurer, chairman and God knows what else to make this happen. Does anyone have any experience of setting up a similar scheme? Any advice on the legalities, pitfalls or any other issues would be gratefully received.

*I work with these guys every day. Getting them to agree on which way is up is hard enough so getting an agreement on a fair subscription rate is going to be a whole lot of fun!

I think it's best you keep it very very simple. The more conditions/rules you have the more it will complicate things. Some of the union rules are good, but they are also very long winded.

All you really need to to allow each fully paid up permit holder to be a member of the association, and allow them a vote for whatever posts you create. The fewer the better. Chairman, secretary and treasurer is more than enough.

Opening an account can be a nightmare, so it might be best to use your own. Get all the money together and send off the cheque when it's all cleared.

Add whatever admin costs to the upfront fee for the permit. Maybe £20 which will give you and your committee £500 for the year.

But as I said, please don't over complicate things.

the FSB might be able to supply some help and information as well but becoming an associate of an existing organistaion is your best bet

Don't let one of the "firms" get involved.

I was a member of the Wyre Forest Taxi Drivers Association once upon a time.

A local plate baron decided that he didn't agree with the views of this association and decided to set up another association with a very similar name and told all his drivers that they were now members.

The WFTDA no longer exists.
