Just one cabbie loses licence in last few years A council has received almost 50 complaints from passengers about cab drivers but has taken just one licence away in nearly four years, new figures show.
A Freedom of Information request by Bedfordshire on Sunday asked how many complaints Bedford Borough Council had received since 2009 from passengers about private hire/hackney carriage drivers.
They reveal that since 2009 the number of incidents reported to the authority by passengers has almost halved from 15 in 2009 to eight in 2012. In 2010 the complaints dropped to 13 and then to 11 in 2011.
Despite this period only one cab driver has had his licence taken away following council investigations into complaints in four years. The figures come after we launched our campaign to improve Cabbie and Passenger Safety (CaPS) calling for more safety measures to be introduced.
A council spokesman said: “There are approximately 800 licensed private hire and taxi drivers in Bedford Borough.
“Since 2009, the council has received 47 complaints relating to taxi and private hire drivers. The vast majority of these complaints relate to alleged inappropriate behaviour of drivers.”
