Meter agents do the new tariff when it comes out and council seal the meter straight afterwards. They don't look at them again unless their is a fault. which is very rare.
Council test meters over a measured mile as part of the vehicle test twice a year. No calibration certificate required.

I think you're being a bit pedantic as regards the word calibration.

I mean, are you trying to say that an agent updating a meter to a new tariff is totally foolproof?

I have to wonder what would be so expensive in having the tester drive the cab around the block for a few minutes :?

I was told yesterday by a driver who has been in the game longer than me that the reason that the garages won't take cars out over a measured mile is due to an incident years ago when a tester got a speeding ticket whilst on the measured mile because the car he was testing had a speedo that wasn't working.

And also if a new gearbox or diff has been fitted and they're not exactly the same ratios as the old one.

That could throw the meter out loads.

I don't know if they can fail for a speedo not working. They can probably refuse to test though. We are talking about at least 20 years ago.

You wouldn't pass here with a duff speedo.

BTW, they could have the driver drive the vehicle and have the tester just test the meter accuracy.

We've never had one of them, they just spend 1 minute in you car and whala they've done.

In Mansfield Roger at Ace - Abc taxis is an agent for Cygnus and will do you a meter change on any meter for £5.

IMO the council don't have to use one firm.

Meters do not "go Wrong" they either work or don't work.

The battery will not "run out" (used to, on a taxitronic in the eighties) still got one of them big grey monsters Sussex?

I've never had a meter problem in years.

Thought you might have asked why the council haven't tested and sealed, though.

I council don't have to use one firm but they have a policy that states that it must be Pitts and as far as they are concerned until the policy is changed then Pitts it must be.

Used to love the wind up halda meters,you could change the cogs in them to make them run faster after inspection ! :)
