One thing that I have to congratulate Roy Hodgson on is that for the first time in a very long time [and I can't remember the last time it happened], he got THE WHOLE TEAM TO A MAN SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM when it was played before the match.

I always watch for this at the start of all international matches irrespective of which teams are playing, even if England are not involved.

For as long as I can remember, there have always been those one or two England players that did not sing the natioanl anthem, whilst the others were belting it out.

But against France the whole teams sang the national anthem. Well done Roy!!

Others may not have noticed it but I did and it matters when you are representing your country.

That's a Roger and the words are kcufing boring too!!

Downheartedly defeatist, depressingly melancholy!!

It goes on about some Polish general fighting an 18th century war in Italy, seven or eight times, then how Bonaparte showed them ways to victory, then fighting with the Swedes and returning by sea. All they did in the old days was fight everyone with sabres and swords.

Bleedin aggressive bunch them Poles. No wonder there's loads of football hudlums over there.

English translation of Polish national Anthem:

Poland has not perished yet
So long as we still live.
That which alien force has seized
We at sabrepoint shall retrieve.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

Cross the Vistula and Warta
And Poles we shall be.
We've been shown by Bonaparte
Ways to victory.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

Like Czarniecki Poznań regains
Fighting with the Swede.
To free our fatherland from chains
We shall return by sea.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

Father, in tears
Says to his Basia
Just listen, it seems that our people
Are beating the drums.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland.
Let us now rejoin the nation
Under thy command.

I have a lot of national anthems in digital format on my computer and there's some right wierd music to some of them.

This is not an anti English rant but your anthem really needs sorting out as it is one of the least inspirational anthems ( god save blah blah ) that I have ever heard, being totally hum drum and non inspirational ( no insult intended). Opinion generally seems to be divided as to what or which should be played at games/events, as there appears to be a number of anthem/songs that are occasionally used.

The Scottish, French and Welsh anthems really get the blood moving and are very inspirational, putting one in the mode of being prepared to die for the cause/game, as opposed to shall we say - wanting to have an afternoon nap.

A bit of fire in the belly, and some water in the eyes, would do wonders for your side before you even kick a ball.

Just remind us, with these fantastic, inspirational, blood moving anthems that the Scottish, and Welsh have, where are they when it comes to major competition finals?
Ours sees us through just fine thank you.

Are Tottenham Hotspur for real?

They sack the manager because they finished fourth in the Premiership last season, but Lewis and Levy wanted a second place finish, FFS!!!

What's the betting that they don't finish anywhere near the top four places next season, no matter who the new manager will be?

Ours is the anthem of the UK......unless you're saying England is the UK, which kind of upsets our Scots, Welsh and Irish brethren.

England should have its own anthem; Diamond Lights by Waddle and Hoddle would be a decent start.

There are plenty of alternatives like;

The Roast Beef of Old England;

When mighty Roast Beef was the Englishman's food, It ennobled our brains and enriched our blood. Our soldiers were brave and our courtiers were good Oh! the Roast Beef of old England, And old English Roast Beef!
But since we have learnt from all-vapouring France To eat their ragouts as well as to dance, We're fed up with nothing but vain complaisance Oh! the Roast Beef of Old England, And old English Roast Beef!
Our fathers of old were robust, stout, and strong, And kept open house, with good cheer all day long, Which made their plump tenants rejoice in this song-- Oh! The Roast Beef of old England, And old English Roast Beef!
But now we are dwindled to, what shall I name? A sneaking poor race, half-begotten and tame, Who sully the honours that once shone in fame. Oh! the Roast Beef of Old England, And old English Roast Beef!
When good Queen Elizabeth sat on the throne, Ere coffee, or tea, or such slip-slops were known, The world was in terror if e'er she did frown. Oh! The Roast Beef of old England, And old English Roast Beef!
In those days, if Fleets did presume on the Main, They seldom, or never, return'd back again, As witness, the Vaunting Armada of Spain. Oh! The Roast Beef of Old England, And old English Roast Beef!
Oh then we had stomachs to eat and to fight And when wrongs were cooking to do ourselves right. But now we're a . . . I could, but goodnight! Oh! the Roast Beef of Old England, And old English Roast Beef!

And then there's one of my favourites;

There'll always be an England
While there's a country lane,
Wherever there's a cottage small
Beside a field of grain.
There'll always be an England
While there's a busy street,
Wherever there's a turning wheel,
A million marching feet.

Red, white and blue; what does it mean to you?
Surely you're proud, shout it aloud,
"Britons, awake!"
The empire too, we can depend on you.
Freedom remains. These are the chains
Nothing can break.

There'll always be an England,
And England shall be free
If England means as much to you
As England means to me.

And the top of the pile for me has to be;

And did those feet in ancient time.
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land

I think thats about as awful and inaccurate a description of England as we're ever likely to hear, it mentions Britain and England as being one and the same, which again, will merely confirm to our island neighbours that we think (in this case) Britain is England.

I dont know if you've noticed, but we aint got much of an empire anymore.....in actual fact I'd suggest singing about the empire and chains in the same verse is likely to cause offence. That aside, it was the British empire, not the English.
