Taxi drivers welcome plan for more ranks

Published on Thursday 14 June 2012 12:03

Proposals have been announced for more taxi ranks in the town centre after drivers said the number of spaces was over subscribed.

Crawley Hackney Carriage Association has approached Crawley Borough Council to consider additional taxi ranks due to the lack of spaces available for drivers.

A report by the head of planning and environmental services at the council, Angela Tanner, said there was 123 licensed hackney carriage vehicles which use five ranks within the borough of Crawley.

These stands provide 38 spaces and include seven outside Marks and Spencers, five in the High Street, 15 outside McDonald’s, eight outside Three Bridges train station and three outside Crawley train station.

Ryan Grice, vice-chairman of Crawley Hackney Carriage Association said: “I think it’s a good thing the council is considering more ranks for us drivers.

“There just aren’t enough spaces – especially in the High Street at night time. It’s a step in the right direction.”

Crawley Borough Council and West Sussex County Council had identified three potential sites: 10 spaces outside Sussex House (temporary until development of the site), five spaces outside Lloyds TSB and four spaces in Queensway.

The council report said: “Additional taxi ranks should provide enhanced customer care to the paying public. This would include persons with walking difficulties, as there would be more options available.”

Chief Inspector Steve Curry, based at Crawley Police Station, has raised no objections to the three sites being made into taxi ranks.

Crawley Borough Council’s Licensing Committee will consider the report at a public meeting on Thursday (June 14) at 7.30pm in the town hall.

The committee has been recommended to approve the proposed locations.
