'Lonely’ taxi driver downloaded images of disgusting scenes

A TAXI driver from Tamworth downloaded more than 12,000 “disgusting” indecent images of children and “extreme” pornography.

Police carried out a search raid on the home of Robert Binding in October last year and seized his computer.

Appearing before Stafford Crown Court last Wednesday (June 6), he admitted four charges of making indecent images of children and one of possessing extreme pornography.

Mr Pat Sullivan, prosecuting, told the court how an examination of the hard drive revealed a total of 2,076 images of children, including 99 at a more serious level four.

But in addition there were 12,212 pictures of adults performing sex acts in a type of pornography that is now illegal to view or possess.

The 64-year-old was given a three-year community order to undergo a sex offender treatment programme and ordered to register with the police as a sex offender for the next five years.

Judge Simon Tonking told him: “For a period of about four years you made indecent photographs of children by downloading them from the internet.

“For about two years, you were also downloading extreme pornography – adults doing disgusting things.

“I accept your shame and self disgust are genuine – you are not a danger to the public.”

The judge added that there was a choice between a short but ineffective prison sentence or long-term supervision and treatment.

“It is in the public interest to make a three-year community order.”

Mr Michael Grey, defending, said Binding, of Tinkers Green Road in Wilnecote, had had to hand in his licence as a taxi driver as a result of these offences.

Binding, who was of previous good character, was “full of shame and self disgust.”

Twice divorced, he was living alone in his now deceased father’s house and started accessing legitimate adult porn, but then moved on to children.

“It started out as curiosity. It may be curiosity turned into habit and then some form of compulsion to look at these images.

“What this man was doing was accessing the images, viewing them and then deleting them – there were no saved images on his hard drive, there was no organisation of files and no distribution.

“No-one else could have viewed these images,” said Mr Grey.
