You will need to include the CPS in your brief.

My experience is of 3 occasions, over 14 months ago, where attacks on a taxi Driver have occurred, with corroborating evidence, and the miscreants have yet to be bought to Court.

I also think that you will have to create some kind of differentiation between those that drive Saloons (Private Hires) and those that drive Taxis, also known as Hackney Cabs.

Hi wee eddie
Thanks so much for this info. Very helpful indeed. Everyone has been so forthcoming with information so far
Thanks again
Sam

There are 100s possibly 1000s of attacks on drivers that have been reported in gory detail in the press, and possibly 10 times that not reported.

We are all very vulnerable, particular the guys and girls who work at night. If I wore a hat I would take it off to them.

The police talk a good game about protecting us, but in the main they couldn't give a rat's behind, unless one of us has blood gushing out of our body.

Thankfully the courts now make it an aggravating feature if we are attacked, but I would sooner it made a case of attacking a taxi/PH driver meant jail. No ifs, no buts, just jail.

Good luck with your endeavours.

Hi sussex
This is very helpful indeed. I hope that you might consider being one of the anonymous interviewees for my research study.

Thanks to everyone who has provided information so far. I wonder if you all might be prepared to complete a one page tick box questionnaire in Jan 2013 (when the research begins). All questionnaires will be anonymous of course. This is in addition to me interviewing those who volunteer. The questionnaire allows me to reach more of you than the interviews and would contain around 15 short questions to capture a broad overview of your concerns. The interviews would then build on the info I get from the questionnaires. Do you think you would have the time to complete such a thing (around 10 minutes)? Everything is fluid at this stage and I am considering everyone's comments in tweaking the project.
Many thanks
Sam

Makes plenty of sense.

I suspect admin on here will help make people aware of the survey.

And maybe the Captain will push it in his column in Taxi'talk'.

I'll do the tick box thing for you, I don't really want to be interviewed though because it's easy to get misquoted, interpretation is a powerful thing and sometimes a flaw.

Thanks Doom, thats brilliant. I would very much appreciate it if you could complete a questionnaire in the future.

p.s. no one should ever get misquoted in academic research as interviewees can have a copy of their interview, so can always refer back to what they said. Its all anonymous, of course, as well. We are obliged as academic researchers to adhere to the highest ethical standards in our profession. I hope that this reassures everyone as far as possible.

I remember that there used to be a poster on here... he was a GMB London rep, I met him a couple of times, I think his name was Don... he died a couple of years ago... he was collecting reams of information on this subject.... but what he collected might still be there..... perhaps someone could point you in the right direction. sussex :D

I think Don was collecting stats on attacks on licensed taxi/PH drivers, alas when he sadly passed away we also lost all those stats.

I believe attempts were made, but it was a very delicate time.

However I'm certain the OP will have no trouble in his research if he contacts the trade mags, including the courier and PHM, and uses the google site search for TDO, which will give him nearly 9 years of posts, which no-doubt will lead to 100s and 100s of really sad threads.
