Taxi Driver Online

Our LA has decided to relax the age restrictions on licensed vehicles. They still must be less than 5 years old when first plated but can then stay on indefinitely. They will have to have 2 MOT's and visuals per year once past 8 years old.

My personal opinion is that old cars don't do much to raise the professional image of the trade, regardless of how well maintained and immaculate they might be. There are many arguments about the cost of replacing cars but its easy to go to an aution and buy a 4/5 year old ex fleet saloon for £3500/£4000.

Just my opinion mind and as only a p/t driver, not an owner I may be missing something. There's an 03 plate Skoda Superb still going around here and its done 330000. It just looks worn out. I won't mention the 1990 Peugeot 505 Estate that is still working in an LA not far from me!

Many LAs don't allow saloon cars.

This question has been debated on here since the birth of TDO and it's predecessors, and I'm still not sure what's best.

The problem is the dross will just license any old shed, and charge the same as people who take pride with their vehicles and their trade.

But it does help some good people who can't afford big shiny motors, or a new car when their car gets written off.

On balance I think an age limit is better than no age limit, but there are defo two sides.

Some do, KGM I think is one of them and equity used to have a rule that they wouldn't take on a new policy if the vehicle was over 8 years old. Some companies will insure older vehicles but they charge more than for newer ones.

Keep some of the sheds off the roads.
If they all did this anyone who wants to buy a vehicle would have to buy much newer ones, making it a level playing field, and improve the trade image
In some areas some owners tend to buy as old a vehicle as possible to keep the price down.

Purpose built WAVs would be different of course due to the cost of buying, so say 15 years for them

So you are saying that a 10 year old TX with say 300,000 miles is ok but a 10 year old Merc with 100,000 miles on the clock isn't.

So could be described as a shed by some and not by others,so what difference does age of a vehicle matter as long as it passes all the tests.

Mine is 13 in september with 147000 miles.
What makes you think yours is in any better nick than mine?

What makes a WAV conversion suddenly more roadworthy or safe than a standard motor?
If my Sharan were a standard 7 seater, would it be any less safe?
