As for you gus would it really have hurt you to answer the question rather than turn the thread into a debate I was looking for a little guidance on whether it was a fairly profitable job and opinions on the job at hand as in do you really get as many nasty drunks as people say etc that was all!

We'll maybe if you'd asked for specifics, I might have given them to you. In reality, anything I or Eddie or anyone else tells you about how the trade is where we are is irrelevant.
I can tell you that trade here is nothing like Eddie describes and neither will be the same as your manor. For example, punters trying to bump the fare are a lot less common here. Vehicle choice varies greatly from one LA to the next. Insurance is damned expensive everywhere. Repairs and maintenance varies with the standards demanded by your LA and the cost of garages where you are.
The best source of information for all this is your local trade and I did tell you to speak to them in a previous post. Whether they will speak to you is another matter. Poachers turned gamekeepers aren't exactly popular.
Just be glad you don't want to work in bloodnock's manor. He'd probably have you burned at the stake.

I haven't changed my opinion BTW, I still think your a mug working for peanuts and making rich men richer at the expense of the local cab trade.
If you do get licensed, you too will come to resent these sharks taking contracts that you need, because they don't have your overheads and can do it cheaper.

If you'd have put it like that in the first place I would probably have agreed it was just the straight out insult that [edited by admin] me off

Thanks for the info from all of you and apologies for any offence caused in trying to defend my corner, at the minute I have an information pack winging its way to me regarding PH licenses in Lincoln, a friend of mine works for a company over there that are taking on drivers all the time, they supply a plated car with radio, insurance, meter etc all included and any fares you take you get 50% of it and then 50% goes to the upkeep and insurance costs etc. To be honest I'm pretty sold on the idea anyway whether it's a mug's game truth of the matter is that I love driving and I do like meeting new faces however varied they are so think this is probably the best way to go into it.

Truly sorry for any offence caused whether it be because of my manners or indeed my ill-fated choice of contributing my time to the community in the form of the Voluntary Car scheme!

Who pays for the Fuel, and what proportion of your sales is that likely to be?

The bloke I spoke to about it said that when you join with them they supply the car with no fuel, insurance, meter or radio to pay for, the commission starts at 50% but rises to 60% when you reach a certain amount of revenue...

So: Do they re-fuel it at the end of the day, or do you remove the cost of the fuel purchased from the 50% that you are due to pay them?

I would also include the On-going cost of the Radio System (How much Business can you expect from it) and The Insurance Certificate. In our Authority you are expected to carry a Copy on the Insurance Certificate in the Taxi at all times.

The reason I ask for the answers to such petty items is that these boys make Second Hand Car Dealers appear to be saintly/

Are you saying that if you work hard and earn more money, then the percentage that you pay goes up from 50% to 60% or is it the other way around and that the percentage that you keep goes up from 50% to 60%?

Other way around Grandad, your earnings start at 50% and go up to 60% when you reach a certain quota as for the fuel I think it's re-fueled at the beginning of the day or before it goes out either way I'm going to see said bloke sometime in the near future and find out exactly how it works before I part with the £300+ to get a PH license and badge!

I don't like split bags. I'd prefer to rent the vehicle, put in fuel, pay insurance and keep whatever I take

There are problems with both ways. If you are on a split bag there is always room for fiddling and if you rent the car you have to earn quite a bit before you earn anything for yourself. I prefer my way where the driver pays for the miles he/she actually drives.

How does that one work Grandad if you don't mind me asking, I did know about the rental car and having to earn X amount before you actually earn a wage where I used to live in Nottingham they was looking for taxi drivers when I first thought about it but the hire of the car was around the £200-£250 mark per week or something silly like that so I thought twice about it but your way sounds tempting where the driver pays for the miles they do but how does it work out and what sort of cost is involved?

I have some drivers who just do school contracts and nothiong else. These drivers are employees and get paid £7.50 per hour. They also get 28 days a year holiday pay and all the things that any other employee gets. I also have people who are self employed and I treat them as being self employed in every way. Basically they work what hours they like, they are welcome to get their own work by handing out their own business cards and any work that is passed on to them by the office, the money is theirs. They do not pay any commission at all. The amount they pay me for the use of the car is an agreed sum per mile for the miles they drive. We basically cover the running costs of the vehicle and a small amount of profit. The drivers take home a far greater sum of money than they would on any other system generally in percentage terms they take home 70-75% of all money that they take.

My opinion:

Step 1, is The Split Bag.
This is the way to start although it won't necessarily make you the most money.
Take it on a Weekly, or Monthly, basis and access the market. See how much you can take on the various shift Patterns that may be available.

Step 2, is to Rent.
By now you will have a pretty good idea of the potential in your area. Remembering that every year is cyclical, with busy bits and quiet bits, with lucky bits and shyte bits. No two weeks are the same.
Again do not sign too long a contract, not all owners honour their maintenance Agreements, as if you are stopped with Illegal Tyres it is you that suffers even though the Owner is responsible for replacing them.

Step 3, is to Buy or Lease your own.
If you're still in business at this stage you will have a pretty good idea of what you can make etc.

I worked for just over 2 years for a local Transport Company: School Runs, Weekends, Day Shifts, Back Shifts, all the rubbish that was available, at £5 an hour. By the end of that period I had a pretty good idea of which were the most suitable shifts for me. My only regret is that I probably should have bought a Second Hand vehicle, for my first purchase, as the Depreciation on my new E7 is mind bending, but it's a great machine.

Your County council (or maybe borough/district - try em all) may have a volunteers service (as you may be already) which will source a vehicle under community transport type-guidlines, ambulance services also use volunteers

a PH plate is £100-£300, a PH badge £100-£200, Newbie Insurance £2500, have you got that sort of loose change, thats assuming your car isnt too old for its 1st plate (4 years here, some are 3 years or less)

stick with what you know mate
