Your County council (or maybe borough/district - try em all) may have a volunteers service (as you may be already) which will source a vehicle under community transport type-guidlines, ambulance services also use volunteers

a PH plate is £100-£300, a PH badge £100-£200, Newbie Insurance £2500, have you got that sort of loose change, thats assuming your car isnt too old for its 1st plate (4 years here, some are 3 years or less)

stick with what you know mate

Okay now I'm confused, first of all I'm a scab because I actually do volunteer work for a Voluntary Car Service and have a school contract at the minute and now you're telling me to do it...

Why are you confused? Don't you read the usernames? Wannabee has only made one reply on the subject. He has never called you a scab.

No grandad I did see that, but everyone else's opinion on me is that I'm a scab and lowlife etc because I work for a voluntary car service yet then Wanna is advising me to do it?

IM; Many Professional Drivers are upset by Volunteers who pinch their business at below cost. That is why 0.01% of the Membership have used the word Scab.

Get you out there and do the business, then comment on those that take work from you. No one wishes to stop you earning a living.

Opinions are like ars*eholes - everybody's got one. Including wannabe.

Go for it if you're up to it. Just remember its not a hobby. And like Eddie said, see what you think of the voluntary sector from the other side of the fence.

TBH I think I got my come-uppance the other day I went to pick up said kid for school only to be told he was on a trip to London and wouldn't need to be picked up until 9am so I buggered off and came back only to be told that "Social services have asked a taxi company to do this trip so you won't be needed after all for today"

And social services didn't think to tell me directly themselves...Oh well but yeh I am looking into it still and honestly thankyou for the advice etc even if it was initially a little hard to get your opinions without getting myself labelled

or you can carry on charging that price but you will then have to pay tax on every £1 earned.

Oh yeah, really?

Now let's look at this tax payment in detail shall we!!

You say you will pay tax on earnings over and above 10,000 miles a year, if you continue to charge 45p per mile over and above 10,000 miles per annum, instead of the reduced rate of 25p per mile, which you should charge to avoid any tax liability, as per the HMRC thresholds for mileage allowances for the tax year 2012/13. These thresholds can be found on this link; http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/paye/rates-thresholds.htm

The standard tax code for the tax year 2012/13 is 810L, which equates to earnings of £8,105 per annum before ANY tax is payable, or in HMRC speak this is the Basic Personal Allowance. Again this information is available on this link; http://www.taxrebateblog.co.uk/index.ph ... -tax-year/

Now, if you can charge 25p per mile over and above 10,000 miles a year without any tax liability, it follows that you will only be taxed on the extra 20p per mile [over and above the 25p allowable rate over the 10,000 miles annual threshold] should you indeed continue to charge 45p per mile over the 10,000 miles a year threshold.

So you will be taxed on earnings of 20p a mile over 10,000 miles a year, if you continue to charge 45p a mile after the 10,000 mile threshold.

Now let’s divide 20 pence [per mile] into the HMRC’s Basic Personal Allowance of £8105 for the tax year 2012/13.

So, £8105 ÷ •20 [20 pence] = 40,525 miles + the initial 10,000 miles at 45p a mile on which tax is not payable = 50,525 miles a year for the current tax year before you will actually pay any tax at all.

Bearing in mind your mileage is probably charged as ‘round-trip’ mileage, which at 45p a mile is equivalent to 90p a mile one way and there are many private hire operators running at 90p a mile in Brum, IS IT ANY WONDER THAT THE ‘TAXI’ TRADE IS SCREAMING OUT FOR VOLUNTEER DRIVER TO BE LICENSED AS HIRE AND REWARD DRIVERS?

Why would social services tell you direct? Surely their contract is with the voluntary organisation and not you?

Well yeh they should have contacted them but they never did so i had 2 wasted journeys out there but all dealt with now.

And as for turning it into yet another debate Brummie...nobody said I had done 40,525 miles...I'm still within the 10,000 miles I have another 6,129 miles to go before they think of taxing me and the reason I know is because I have kept all my job sheets to tally up my mileage and it's not me that makes the rules...If you wish to make a complaint then feel free to do that by contacting the CTA I'm sure they'd be willing to listen but at 90p per mile is it really any surprise they use someone at half the cost?

Oh give over mate, aren't you taking this Russian role play a bit too far now, when it's funny it is funny, but you are just wilfully attacking the bloke now.

I think that he is saying that some taxis are going out at 90p per mile for the loaded journey, you know, when there is actualy a customer on board. You get 45p per total mileage which is from your home, pick the customer up, take them where they are going and then home again.
Even at 90p per loaded mile it is far to cheap. Don't forget that licensed drivers have the extra costs of the correct insurance, the cost of the licensing and paying themselves a wage.
