Taxi driver attackers ‘must face tougher punishments’

A TAXI boss is calling for harsher punishments for people who attack drivers.

Nick Astley, boss at Metro Cars, says attacks on Bolton drivers happen at least once a week, but he says the punishments for carrying out the attacks on drivers are no deterrent.

One driver was recently attacked by a woman passenger as he was driving along Chorley New Road. She hit him and he suffered a bloody nose.

Taxi drivers are now relying on fellow drivers to help them when they are attacked.

The driver who is being assaulted radios for help and taxi drivers drive to his aid.

Mr Astley said by the time he had got from the office in Tonge Moor Road to the incident in Chorley New Road, police were there along with 25 to 30 other drivers.

He said: “I feel that when people are caught there should be more severe sentences because there is not enough of a deterrent.

“Incidents are happening all over the place, not just certain areas.

“The younger generation are drinking and taking drugs, which is not a good mix.”

In February, father-of-three Gulistan Khan was punched in the face by a passenger and dragged out of his cab, his attackers stealing his car.

His black cab, worth tens of thousands of pounds, was later found burnt out in Rochdale.

Mr Astley said more awareness is also needed about events such as Ramadan observed by many Asian drivers.

He said many people are not aware when it takes place and a lot of drivers take time off while they are fasting.

It means that taxis need to be booked in advance during busy periods, to avoid people being disappointed.

He said: “We try to explain it, but people do not understand.

“Some customers do not accept it and it can cause problems which is a real shame.”

And why was that?

Was the driver inappropriate with you?

You do leave us all in a state of burningly anxious suspense when you finish your story just before you are about to thump a guy.

No such thing as that, I always sit in the back with strange drivers. It's called taking the circuitous route, in fact they ignored the satnav when it told them to turn left twice and when they realised I had noticed that they had ignored the satnav they then turned the volume off, it was at that point I wanted to slap the driver for treating me like an idiot

But then PH can take the circuitous route; there's nowt in the legislation preventing them is there?

Yeah I think you'll find it in the 1976 act

Yeah I think you'll find it in the 1976 act

In fact here it is

Quote:
69 Prolongation of journeys.

(1)No person being the driver of a hackney carriage or of a private hire vehicle licensed by a district council shall without reasonable cause unnecessarily prolong, in distance or in time, the journey for which the hackney carriage or private vehicle has been hired.
(2)If any person contravenes the provisions of this section, he shall be guilty of an offence.

Toots,

The sat nav is an invaluable tool!! but to take the shortest route it will often give you loads of left/right turns (many within yards/meters of one another) that will just end up making you sick - a straighter direct journey is often not really any longer - perhaps he was using local knowledge.

I think as drivers we will all have a rough idea as to whether someone is taking us around the block (so to speak), having said that a couple of extra pence (not pounds) is acceptable for a smoother journey.

The decent Cabbie will chose/offer the best route.

For example: From Ayr to Troon is shortest (and therefore cheapest) via Prestwick.

However it takes 10 minutes less to go around the By-pass, but is £2.50 more expensive.

I usually give customers the option.

My sentiments exactly, which is why he deserved a slap

It is something that I do if there is more than one route................always give them the option - it lets you/I, off of the hook.

What problems does it cause that can't be solved by putting the phone down? I think the workforce needs to be multicultural and therefore won't be affected so much by things such as Ramadan

The above has what to do with the sentencing of criminals that attack taxi drivers? Nobody deserves to be beat up doing their job, I merely pointed out that those with less self control may well use it as an excuse, add the alcohol and there sits the mitigating circumstances that judges are all too happy to except
