Simples. Limit all of your drivers to 5 shifts a week except voluntarily to cover absent colleagues. Charge owner drivers £20 per shift and your renting drivers £45 per shift.

Create an early/late rota to cover the wee small hours so that every driver does just one late if working nights or one early if working days.

Create an overall rota that reflects demand on given shifts.

Allow a couple of HC drivers on your fleet, preferably owner-drivers to work when they want but logged into your system FOC to take bookings when all other drivers at any given moment are busy.

I think some people here could learn a lot from the bus industry where the big companies have found that it pays dividends to train drivers and pay them well. Less accidents, happier customers, less staff sickness, happier staff...more profits.

I don't see that any hack or ph driver should have to work silly hours to earn a living. I picked up a fare a couple of years ago from a seaside holiday park and got chatting with the guy; it turns out he runs a ph company in the better part of Surrey. "Busy tonight etc"..no, we're never busy round here (a rural area with a bit of seaside, nearest town 15 miles away). He told me I should get some grafters and I could sit back and rake the money in; his divers were all earning big money. Yes, they might do in Weybridge, but in rural Kent, the sheep don't go out very much.

So yes, I'm self-employed, pay very little tax and get working tax credit, council tax rebate, but just manage to pay my bills. But some of the other round here chase every £4 fare and complain they have to pay too much tax. work less, make the same profit and don't pay tax is the answer. Most of them don't even know how much per mile it costs to run the car, let alone know how much per mile they're earning!

In fact I spoke with a local hack a while ago who moaned about his tax bill. I asked him how much a mile he earnt. No idea. I asked him annual mileage, mpg and a few other bits, how much tax he paid. The next week I told him how much he earned by working backwards through his figures. He was getting about 40p per mile! I earn £1 per loaded mile and work less than he does, have more outgoings and am less stressed.

Maybe cabbies of both genres need to learn basic business accountancy too. I certainly wouldn't pay someone £350 a week to rent a car from them!

So why have you come on here to ask for advice?

waqas, what car do you supply for £350 a week?

Star Cars (birm) will supply a driver with a NEW VW Transporter LWB on a 4 year drive+buy deal for £260 a week (inc the radio/data thing) as you are 30% dearer you must be supplying a Brabus...

It is on its' way for taxis. Meters have the capabilities and have done for a few years, I was thinking that they were stalling until they could find a way of enforcing it - then recently I saw one of the latest ones that has that capability. When it will be, I don't know - but it will come.

Our Tariff's are dearer here, our plate renewals and fees are much higher here as our council is a CITY and they want to rip the [edited by admin] out of us, RENT is high, everythings high we operate in a town where we have average household income of £28k+ so drivers earn more, they pay me more to cover my expenses and make a decent profit.

Car they get is either a brand new toyota avensis or passat, top notch sh*t none of this mondeo crap

So why don't you just rent them a car and a radio and let them keep what they earn or do you prefer it so they have to do long hours and more work?

Thats what I am doing mate, CAR/RADIO/INSURANCE AND ALL THE OTHER EXPENSIVE FOR £350 a week, its not expensive considering I am paying everything and only make £100 per week from what they give me as £250 is expenses. They just need to rent and add fuel. not a bad price mate

It is a dreadful arrangement for it requires them to work long hours just to break even.

I gave my suggestion earlier in this thread. Rent the cars out on a per-shift basis at £45 per shift assuming they take an average of at least £15/hour.

Owner-drivers pay £20 per shift.
