Arsonists set fire to Sheffield cab as driver prays

A Sheffield cabbie has been left unable to work after his vehicle was set on fire while he was praying at his local mosque.

Mohammed Joydu Miah, aged 40, of Nidd Road East, Darnall, was at morning prayers at the Aaliya Mosque, on Staniforth Road, when his cab went up in flames.

Mr Miah, a married father-of-two, said he had only parked his cab 10 minutes earlier when it was targeted.

He said while police are investigating the arson attack and his insurance company deals with his claim, he is unable to work - leaving him short of money.

Mr Miah said he was upset about the attack and was suspicious about a group of teenage boys who raised the alarm by banging on the mosque doors and shouting ‘fire, fire’ while he prayed.

He said he had never seen the boys before and he has heard other cabs in the area have also been targeted.

“There were about 60 or 70 of us inside the mosque for morning prayers when we heard banging on the doors and people shouting ‘fire, fire’.

“We went outside and my car was well alight,” he said.

“There were eight to 10 boys hanging around who I have never seen before, which I am suspicious about.

“I don’t know why anybody would want to do this - there were so many people at the mosque, the flames could easily have spread and injured somebody.

“I am upset because until my insurance claim is sorted out I am unable to work - I could hire a car but it would cost me £200 a week, which I can’t afford.

A police spokeswoman said: “We are investigating the circumstances surrounding a vehicle fire on Staniforth Road, Sheffield.

“Following confirmation from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue that the fire was started deliberately, further enquiries are ongoing.”

If they catch the culprit I bet they'll only give him a couple of 'Our Fathers' and a few 'Hail Marys'.

I notice there's no pic of the vehicle was just wondering if it was a Hackney or a PH not a nice thing to happen though seems to be a few of these appearing in the news just lately. I wonder if it is sign of economic tensions

Says it was his "Black Cab" that got torched..sounds like a hack.

As for "economic tensions" it might be racial tensions indirectly brought about through economic tensions...human beings have a habit of turning on each other when times get hard and they need someone to blame for it all.

Sorry bloodnock perhaps I wasn't making myself clear I was referring to the fact that there seems to be a spate of similar stories all around the UK

this one is most probably racially motivated but there seems to be a lot of cab/ph torchings at the moment a worrying trend because it can lead to copycat incidents

@Blooder's

@Edders

Has it crossed your mind that some of these are struggling drivers getting their money out the dodgy way, I've known a few who've done their cars and their houses in hard times, I don't think this fella is one of them btw, I think he's more likely a victim of a cab vengeance myself, probably took a job he shouldn't have in front of the wrong driver, if he's like some of the strokey [edited by admin] we have here it's no surprise, could also be kids but it looks like someone knew his eyes would be off for a confirmed time period to me.
