Campaign for new airport taxi rank

Calls have been made for a new hackney taxi rank at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Guiseley and Rawdon ward councillor, Graham Latty, says uncertainty surrounds proposals for a new facility at the airport.

Coun Latty submitted a question to a meeting of Leeds City Council in July calling for a taxi rank in Whitehouse Lane.

But he says although the administration has reiterated its commitment to a permanent rank at LBA, this appears to fly in the face of recent planning decisions that will see the controversial ‘kiss-and-fly’ tax remain for cabbies dropping off holiday makers at the airport.

Coun Latty believes the administration should make it absolutely clear the £2 charge is unfair and that access to the airport should not be something holidaymakers have to pay for.

He said: “I accept the planning process has been dealing with the airport’s forecourt plan, and that a decision has been reached that will allow some free drop-off areas closer to the terminal.

“However, in my view, this does not fully resolve the issue. Passengers seeking direct access to the terminal building will still have to pay an extra £2 to taxis. No wonder the taxi trade and passengers are up in arms about this – both are facing the consequences of these entirely avoidable charges levied by the airport.”

Coun Latty added: “There are also safety concerns that result from people getting dropped off in Whitehouse Lane, and the new free drop-off area will leave passengers facing a walk, possibly in the rain, to get to the main terminal building.

“The big question is does the administration want to solve this problem for Leeds residents, or is it simply a case of saying the right things but actually doing nothing about it? If it is serious, then really we need to see some proposals brought forward for a new hackney taxi rank as soon as possible.”

I think it's on-going.
