Sheffield dad admits racially abusing taxi driver

Published on Wednesday 22 August 2012 09:09

A dad from Sheffield hurled racist insults at a taxi driver and damaged his cab in a dispute over a fare, a court heard.

Christopher Atkinson, aged 27, asked to be taken from Saltergate, Chesterfield, to Meadowhead at 4.40am, but became abusive when driver Shahid Parvez asked for £20 up front.

Atkinson, of Atlantic Road, Lowedges, said he would not pay and swore at the cabbie, telling him to ‘go back to his own country’.

He then kicked a sliding door on the taxi, causing an 8in dent.

Mr Parvez stopped a passing police van and Atkinson was detained as he tried to walk away.

He began to struggle with officers, who sprayed him twice with CS gas before he was subdued.

In interview, Atkinson said he had been drinking since 7pm and could not remember the incident.

Becky Mahon, prosecuting told Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court: “He said that when he gets drunk he does stupid things and can’t stop himself. He said he wasn’t a racist and he has Asian friends.”

Atkinson, a married businessman with young children, admitted racially-aggravated damage and resisting police.

John Wilford, mitigating, said: “He doesn’t go out drinking regularly but, when he does, he drinks too much. He hasn’t been out since this incident.

“He is married with young children and has just set up his own business.”

Sentencing was adjourned until next month.

So how much did he demand from him when the journey had finished?? I bet it was more than £20.

Round here the Asian drivers are getting a mullering every weekend for ripping people off one instance being, a cab from Mansfield to Huthwaite is £14, the Asian drivers are charging £20 before they move off, they won't go into Huthwaite they'll drop the passengers (women included) on the main Huthwaite Road which is well outside of Huthwaite telling them that this is it they drive no more.

Is there any wonder they are getting racially abused??

Nothing cos he asked for the money upfront.

As would any sensible white man.

Then surely the punters wait for the likes of those that don't do it.

Since he didn't take him anywhere, that's a bold assumption.

Why is it a bold assumption, it's a well known fact that the Asian drivers always ask for more when the journey is at it's end.

Why are people so stupid, hackney cabs should not ask for money up front they are governed by meters and have to by law use them so how can they say how much the fare will be, ask for a deposit by all means, put the meter on refund, any difference in price, if the fare is more than the deposit ask for extra, or put it down to experience. Its the punters choice which hackney carriage they take from a rank I cannot see a problem if you are polite, after all its better not to argue about a couple of quid than spend and hour or two at a police station with damage to you cab than out ways any cost repairs would be, and of course a good memory always helps, but no doubt I will be shot down in flames by the Trade or being to soft, of course CCTV always helps.

#-o meters only have to be used within the licenced area. Out with this area a taxi driver can charge any rate he wants [-X
