Jail warning for cab-fare dodger

A TEENAGER arrested after failing to pay for a taxi fare after a night out has been warned she could end up in jail if she doesn’t pay her fines.

Elise Wakeman got out of the taxi at her mother’s house but had no money to pay the £16.60 fare.

The 19-year-old gave the driver her bank card in lieu of payment and said she would be in touch to settle the fare.

But when the driver hadn’t heard from her for weeks he called police.

Wakeman, of Wharfedale Drive, South Shields, pleaded guilty to making off without making payment at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that Wakeman owes more than £600 fines to the court –which she stopped paying in May.

Magistrates gave Wakeman a six-month conditional discharge and ordered her to pay £16.60 compensation to the taxi driver.

Chairman of the bench Paul Allen said: “You’re here for making off from a taxi without paying, but you have more serious matters here.

“If you don’t pay your fines, you could end up in prison.”

Val Bell, defending, said: “She had been out with friends in a pub and decided to get a taxi home. When she got there, she realised she had no money, so gave the driver her bank card.

“She simply forgot to pay him. ”

Be in no-doubt if she doesn't pay her fines, she will go to prison.

I thought if you were on the dole or unemployed payment of fines was deferred until you started working...that's assuming shes on the Dole.

Maybe I'm wrong..I just found this article.

Thursday, August 23, 2012
North Devon Journal

AN UNEMPLOYED former carpet fitter begged magistrates to send him to prison rather than make him pay a £425 fine.

David Pett, 39, of Morwenna Park Road, Northam, appeared before North Devon Magistrates' Court after failing to pay the fine.

It was originally imposed in February 2010 after he failed to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency of a change of keeper of a car he sold.

When magistrate Susan Poxon asked Pett how much money he had brought to court to pay the fine he said, he had none. I've bought nothing because I have no money," he said.

Mrs Poxon then asked how Pett proposed to pay the fine. He said: "I don't. It's a red tape tax that's at the bottom of my priorities."

Pett told magistrates he had three of his own children and two step-children to look after and he refuses to claim benefits as a matter of principle.

Pett, who said he had been a criminal in the past before cleaning up his act 15 years ago, told magistrates he could pay the fine at a rate of £2 a week. That was unacceptable, said Mrs Poxon.

Ex-carpet fitter Pett, whose business went under four years ago, said: "Well then can't you just lock me up? I've done prison before and I can do it again."

Mrs Poxon replied: "We don't normally lock people up when they request it."

Pett was then ordered to repay the fine at a rate of £15 a week. If he defaults he will face 14 days in prison.

He said: "I just can't do it. You'll be seeing me again. It's a joke."

It is quite common to see/hear people with bravado offering to go to prison instead.

But normally the outstanding amounts get paid before their next court date.

They don't jail people now for non payment, they put them on these Community Payback schemes.

One of my sons, who I don't have anything to do with because basically he is an ar5ehole, has fines from the courts going back years. He has never been sent to prison for not paying. In fact they don't even try to pick him up.

They get taken over by these private Bailiff companies when all avenues have been exhausted.

They don't pay cos either they are homeless and haven't got a bean, in that case they could be sentenced to sitting at the back of the court all day. Or they think the fine will go away.

However the fine will only go away in that case if they do some days inside. The bravado nearly always goes when the jailers walk in. :D

He probably is paying through his social.

No, He is not paying at all. The fines date back about 7 years now. All for motoring offences in Scotland. He has been arrested several times for other matters since then and still nothing. The local police have even told me that they have a warrent out to arrest him for the non payment but they never have.

If he did, it's likely they'd lift him some quiet Sunday morning around 7 am.....
