The latest from the rumour mill, The Gallery nightclub in York which has a taxi rank right outside the door has just undergone a huge refurbishment, the rank sign has since disappeared and we are led to believe, are you ready.

A waiting area has been made inside the building for customers to use a free phone to call a certain PH firm, and so they can pull up or stop outside to wait for their customers, the rank is being moved further away to facilitate this, the company in question already do this at other venues in the town, whenever you ring them everyone is given the same colour, so that when you approach the car and ask the driver who he is looking for and he says Green you think its for you and get in. What you don't know is that another 100 people all have the same colour so in effect it is ranking, the LA look the other way as it would be too time consuming and cause too much legislation to mount a sting operation to stop it.

Are the PH sitting outside waiting for bookings or arriving after bookings have been made ? They may be in the wrong by not taking the passenger they are booked for (but if they're all Green :?: ) but at least they're taking someone who has pre-booked.

We used to have a system at our office where you had to take the person you were booked for. At peak times someone could walk in and be allocated the nearest car which at the time could be 5 minutes away, the next person walks in and is given a car that has just become available round the corner and so that car turns up first. That led to aggro as people who had booked earlier could wait longer for their car than others who had just turned up. Now we are given office jobs as 'customer' and the first car to arrive takes the person who has been waiting longest. It may not technically be legal but it eliminates the 'I've been waiting longer than you' potential for trouble. I should note that this only happens at peak times when lots of people are waiting for cars.

Removal of ranks have to be via a Traffic Order. I doubt one of those have been made.

If however one is planned then object.

I have to agree with Sussex there. go online and do a search for the York Traffic Orders. It may take a bit of searching, but all cab ranks will be listed there, along with all amendments etc.

If however the rank is on private land, there's not much you can do about it.

It still has to be removed legally.

Speak to your Highways Department and get a contact name there.

Better still go up in person and get the rank sign reinstated.
