why,when a car is deemed in good condition (by an LO) enough to be plated, when it has an MOT and passes the compliance test, should a mileage of 200,000 be enough to end its useful working life?

especially when it has been serviced and repaired to a good standard and has never failed in service

in the current financial situation this seems ridiculous, plus it could easily force a working owner driver to pack in and simply sign on...

does your LA have a maximum mileage limit for plated vehicles?

No but it has an age limit of 7 years for a private car and 10 years for a London style taxi.

the reasoning is lost in the mists of time but in my view cars these days are better built than they were in the 1970's when most of these local laws were passed. My Licencing Officer also says in our mainly rural area mileages and average speeds are higher than they are in London, hence the age limit of 10 years for cabs. Personally, I'm just itching to appeal their decision in magistrates court when they refuse to relicence my 55 reg Voyager with 130,000 miles on the clock next year.

The view of the mags ought to be that the laws are not fit for purpose.

As others have pointed out, we have minibuses on a PSV licence that can be of ANY age still fit for service, and we all know there's some right dogs out there!

what exactly would be the procedure to take a complaint to magistrates, i will hit the 200k roughly next july - assuming i get a new school contract in April (if i dont it wont matter) - or can anyone object at any time?

there is a list of bodywork blemishes that can be allowed (5cm, 20cm, no visible repairs, etc) its annoying that the best running 200k car in world cant have a plate, an M reg Merc estate parks by me at the school pickup with 2,000,000 miles on its clock, plated PH by Birmingham, wouldnt equality between LA's be an issue? (whats good for them should be good for all)

Also, its a bit misleading for an LO to say "you can keep the car plated forever" knowing theres a 200k mileage limit, so use it and you cant keep it plated....perhaps he meant as a static display

it would be handy to know how many LA's do NOT have a mileage limit for working cars, but apart from that, it seems stupid to retire a car cos its covered 200k when any amount of its components could be new or newer....

pity i cant get a job off a magistrate to BHX...ooops, sorry squire, i know we are only half way but its just on 199,999 miles so ill drop you here, i know its the M6 but you should get a lift easily

thats another thing, will they let me plate it on (say) 199,000 when i average 30k a year and by the next time to plate it could be on well over 200k...

What is stated in the bye-laws/licensing policy regarding age or mileage limits?

You would apply for licence renewal and appeal against the decision to refuse to grant the licence in the magistrates' court within 21 days of refusal.

1st plate/grant maximum of 4 years old and 100,000 miles

cant be plated after 6 years old UNLESS age exempted (3 tests a year with 4 month plates)

max mileage 200,000 miles then its scrap

What could the LA do if the speedometer cable was to "fall" out of the back of the clock for a few months every year and then "fall" back in for testing ? (your satnav could tell you your speed and if you knew what your average weekly mileage was you could keep up with your servicing ) speaking hypothetically of course !
