Pendle councillor's call for change in law to allow ‘share taxis’

A PENDLE councillor has called for taxi laws to be reformed to allow them to operate in a similar way to buses.

Coun Ian Tweedie, a former bus driver, believes there is a ‘clear need’ for share taxis in his Vivary Bridge ward.

He has written to the Law Commission, currently reviewing taxi regulations, suggesting it trials the idea.

Share taxis typically take passengers on a fixed, or semi-fixed, route without timetables – instead, departing when all seats are filled.

Coun Tweedie said: “Bus drivers are reluctant to drive down narrow streets with cars parked both sides when they know they will have to pick up the bill for any damage to cars.”

The Law Commission said the suggestion will be considered as a formal consultation response.

Did I say locals were best placed?

I meant to say......shouldnt be allowed anywhere near a licensing committee.

We have had laws which allow shared taxis for nearly 27 years.

Maybe the councillor should put his money up and offer the service his seeks.
