Where did most of that money go ?Into the pockets of the banks maybe,to grossly over exagerate property prices and lend people money they couldnt pay back.Or did the torys plough it back into building more,no didnt think so.She didnt believe in a society did she

I don't think the money from the sale of council houses went anywhere in particular. I don't think councils were allowed to spend it.

Then our problems are all solved...several billion pounds + interest lying unspent somewhere. That will pay a couple of months interest on the national debt.

I think you will find it was spent long ago BTW - just not on anything socially responsible.

They could not spend the money. They could only use it to reduce debt.

Youve hit the nail on the head and i would have thought you were a maggie lover  It should have gone back into building more affordable housing, but true to tory mantra it went back to those that needed it most i.e the privalleged/chosen ones !!

I am a Maggie lover. But I don't agree with everything. I do believe that all the money raised by the sale of council houses should have been spent on more social housing.

She allowed tenants who had paid rent to councils for donkey's years to buy and have relief (financially) for the years spent paying rent, BTW where tenants wanted the councils had to supply the mortgages, so not all of it was "given to banks"

you really should look up the facts now and then

Under her leadership millions of individuals became shareholders in public utilities and so did the unions via pension investments, or is that against your principles too?

How many kept their shares and how many just sold them on to make a quick buck from the knock down prices she gave them away for?
How many of these "so called" competing companies actually compete to deliver a better service? And how many just get together to screw us all over?

Despite all her promises how much exactly went back into house building ? How many took bribes from dodgy people who turned them over to property companys to rent them out ? P.S the Mail isnt fact xx

You need to look up your facts as well. It has already been pointed out that the money could not be used to build new houses so where do you get the idea that Maggie promised that it could be used for building.

Many tenants who bought their homes at a discount quite understandably decided to sell them, make a profit and move to bigger and better homes elsewhere. Vast swathes of former council properties were snapped up by private landlords in the buy to let boom at the beginning of the last decade. True-blue Tory Westminster saw half of its council properties sold under right to buy. Of those a third are now in the hands of private landlords.

Despite initial reassurances that each home sold would be replaced, the whole policy was deliberately constructed to prevent this from happening. Receipts from council house sales went to the Treasury rather than local authorities, which were prevented from building new homes.
