Phoned one of my drivers up last night to check something with them and they mentioned that their badge renewal had been held up due to a council admin problem. I quickly found out that the badge was out of date as of yesterday but he would be back on Wednesday. Today I thought I would check with the council his badge ran out 3 weeks ago ! He has only put in the renewal today it seems he was relying on the renewal papers as his reminder and they did not arrive in the post. So now he has put himself off the road for a week and got penalty points on his license fancy not knowing when his badge runs out I am obviously going to have to get start recording expiry dates etc.

What a dozy pl*nk*r

Up here, he'd be off the road until he passed the knowledge test.

If your renewal goes in within a month you are OK on that front BUT had he been one day later it would have been treated as a new application and he would have had to get a CRB check and medical which would have put him off the road for more than a month

By the way Doom and Nidge we are an all hackney fleet and as such do not need an operators license or have to comply with rules for PH. My drivers are genuinely self employed being allowed to take work from elsewhere (as long as they don't leave me struggling to cover our own work) I therefore assume they will look after their own affairs I.E car insurance badge etc.

Oh and this driver has been in the trade for nearly 20 years so he really should have known better !

Down here if you are a minute over time you have to do the whole lot again i.e.

Knowledge test (three parts)
DSA taxi test
Medical
CRB
Disability awareness test
Numeracy test
Literacy test

And a couple more things I have forgotten, needless to say it doesn't happen very often.

The expiry date must be on his badge so you would think he must look at his badge at least once a week if not every day.
Being the boss you can look at his and others badges every time you talk to them as they must be wearing it to be working.

I am the only cabbie in our town that wears their badge all the others have it in the car usually on the dashboard but don't bother actually wearing them or even looking at them even though if they are inspected by the council they can get penalty points on their license for not wearing them !

Do what all the office twonks do, wear your badge/pass all day, even when walking round the town at dinner time, some of em must lead really sad lives, either that or they have a very poor memory and need to know who they are and where they work
