Many tenants who bought their homes at a discount quite understandably decided to sell them, make a profit and move to bigger and better homes elsewhere. Vast swathes of former council properties were snapped up by private landlords in the buy to let boom at the beginning of the last decade. True-blue Tory Westminster saw half of its council properties sold under right to buy. Of those a third are now in the hands of private landlords.

Despite initial reassurances that each home sold would be replaced, the whole policy was deliberately constructed to prevent this from happening. Receipts from council house sales went to the Treasury rather than local authorities, which were prevented from building new homes.

Where do you get this rubbish from?

Blackpool is correct Grandad the purpose was clear create a shotage of housing allowing prices to soar,     nothing more than you would expect from that Lady of the Night :evil     :

No he isn't. At no time has any government stated that the money raised from the sale of council houses was to be used to build more houses.
I find it quite offensive that you refer to Mrs Thatcher in the way that you do. Is it any suprise that topics get locked.

It was indeed laid down by government and no-one denies it that income from selling council housing could not be spent on replacements ask your local council they will confirm.

That specimen somewhat irritates me and just maybe by using that expression i am insulting workers in the sex industry your point is taken.

The money from council house sales went to central funds, Local authorities soon realised they could set up their own Housing Association (non profit making and regd charities) and hand all their housing stock to them free of charge, HA's tenants do not have the right to buy, the council tenants eventually become HA tenants and if in receipt of HB the local authority then has to pay the HA to cover rents of old council tenants living in ex-authority properties

name me one that failed (as above)

there are 2687 registered housing associations in the UK so they must be doing something right, many built their own properties or bought estate where a builder went bust
