Its a shift system we have as the only hackney firm and all of towns hackneys in this company
On a friday saturday and sunday we do shift work at night. A shift is car 1-25 and b is 26-50
So im 1 and its friday our shift startin 6pm untill 6am all radio work will only be given to A shift and the rest will just be working of the ranks and the next day itll be the other way around.
Its complicated but its just the way we do things.

So you are paying radio rent yet unable to use the radio when it's busy?

Only in the cab trade.

Nope.
The other shift gets jobs but they are called call out jobs in which the operator will call out the area where the job is and the closes driver will respond.
Normally you wont get a radio job if your on rank unless there is a job close to the rank then the last cab on rank will get that fare.
But on shift day youll get radio fare even on rank.

I would be guessing that they do it this way because there is not enough work to go around.

So when it's busy half the fleet can't take the work, but during the dead time of the day the whole fleet can access radio work.

And should a radio job be made available at night to the non-radio shift, that job goes to the bloke at the back.

The world has gone f***ing mad.

when i was a hack/circuit car a job went to the nearest car, if no car was available it went to the 1st rank car (dead mileage notwithstanding) if i got a rank job the base were told i was pulling off and to where i was going

The reason we dont give to 1st car is because average rank fare is £4-10 and sometimes youll get a out of town fare so if youve been waiting on rank for about a houre hoping for a good fare and you get pulled off to do a local 3.50 fare so thats why we do last.
Its a good system we like as someweekends on friday and saturday night you can take home 200+ per 12houre night shift so this system dont bother me.
