Taxi drivers get more cash to transport disabled

The Northern Territory Government has doubled the amount of money taxi drivers can claim for transporting people confined to wheelchairs.

Transport Minister Adam Giles says the number of cab trips disabled people can take has also been increased from 120 to 180 a year.

"We recognise that sometimes those passengers were not being picked up in a timely manner," he said.

"We have increased the incentive from $10 to $20 dollars a trip to try and make it more beneficial for a taxi driver to want to go and pick up those passengers.

"We believe this incentive will go a long way to improving access for people in a wheelchair or a mobility device."

A disability advocate says the change is long overdue.

Michelle Castagna says increasing driver payments and the number of trips people can take under the Lift Incentive Scheme will improve the quality of life of the disabled.

"I think it clarifies a lot of messy little anomalies that were in the system," she said.

"So, congratulations to Adam Giles and his Government."

I don't think our lot would do this, or even run a story like this.

But only if the Authority sponsored Charity wheels Transport was unavailable...Usually that's the weekend when their drivers like to relax.
