I am a Midlands based solicitor and have been practicing for nearly 10 years. I specialise in advocacy and Taxi Licencing law (amongst other areas) and have represented drivers from both Hackney and Private Hire companies for many years having previously worked at one of Birmingham's largest law firms.

Reluctant to ask this question and display lack of knowledge on real life, but here goes. How can a self employed business owner be a member of a Trades Union? I was always under the impression Trades Unions were for employees only, mainly in industry. I can understand being members of Chamber of Commerce, CBI or Federation of Small Businesses.

I've always been of the understanding that if you are a self employed business person/entreprenuer, you wouldn't be eligible?

I think that the answer is that some, like the NTA, are not unions but associations.

2jobs your a worker ie you drive therefore a Union is appropriate for you it will assist in many ways.

Helping establish appropriate licensing regimes through the Unions political input [many councillors will be sponsored supported by a Union]
Dealings with your LA disciplines etc
Supplying sick pay schemes
Car vehicle purchase schemes [ cheaper than any other source]
Cheap PH Hack Insurance

assist you in determining whether you are actually self employed, many arei n fact "Workers under the direction of the Company" which allows you to handle your own tax affairs but gives certain employment rights. Paid hols, disciplinary procedures, negotiations on every aspect of your working enviroment, working time regs, Health and safety etc.
