Part of my day job is to try and drum up business by visiting taxi ranks and offices usually within a 50/60 mile radius of the insurance office where I work.

Today I been in a fairly affluent seaside town and visited 4 offices of different firms. Lots of similarities:

1) Exteriors all very shabby with garish posters and lettering. 3 out of 4 advertising for drivers.

2) All had customer waiting areas with seats I wouldn't want to sit on even in my gardening overalls

3) The contoller was sat behind a barred window, this is not a deprived inner city area but a fairly famous "nice" seaside resort

4) The controller; male/female didn't seem to make a difference, looked like their hair hadn't seen shampoo for a few days.

5) They were scruffy, the clothes worn would not be accepted by a charity shop for resale.

6) The drivers I saw weren't much better and seemed to have forgotten how to use a razor.

7) Looking through behind the controllers, the offices were a mess.

How's trade I asked? Bit quiet was the reply. TBH seeing this lot, if I was a customer on holiday I would prefer to walk! I don't get it!

I learned a trick from my taxi driving activities, I took the scenic route

I guess what I failed to make clear that this was just in one town. I visited 2 others that day and found tidy cars, drivers and offices. I was just really puzzeled as to why in these tough times businesses can be so slovenly.

My old boss used to ask how many calls id done in a 7.5tonner as a rep, i included laybys, snackvans and calling home to see the....... and he asked why my weekly mileage was high, and where did i live? our base was in Cannock so i used to say "the other side of Oswestry", i never said how far the other side though...
