Taxi driver's eye gouged in terrifying Dundee attack

Police are hunting two teenagers after a taxi driver's eye was gouged during a vicious attack.

Grandfather Norman Cobb (49), who lost his left eye in a childhood accident, was beaten as he drove his passengers from Lochee to the Hilltown.

His attacker rained blows on his head before digging his nails into his right eye.

Mr Cobb chased the thugs along Rosebank Street, only ending his pursuit when the pain overcame him.

He was treated at Ninewells for concussion and cuts to his retina and is still suffering headaches.

He said: "It was absolutely terrifying because I was saying to myself 'If this guy's got a knife I could be killed.'

"Punch after punch — the blows started coming. Then his nails went into my good eye, trying to gouge it out.

"I was in a really dark area so I kept driving to Rosebank Street where it's lighter and busier. I stopped the car and they jumped out."

Mr Cobb is struggling to sleep and has made several trips to hospital for treatment.

He said: "My eye is all to pot and my head is sore all the time. The doctors say it will get better but every time I shut my eyes it comes back to me."

The attack took place in Rosebank Street at 12.20am last Saturday.

A police spokesman said: "One of the males is described as being 16 to 18 years old wearing grey jogging bottoms and a red top.

"The other is aged about 17 and was wearing a green or blue hooded top, grey tracksuit bottoms and trainers."

Anyone with information can call the police on 0300 111 2222.

What astonishes me, is how youths in their late teens or twenties think it is, fair game, to attack people twenty and thirty years their senior. I can honestly say when I was around their age. The thought wouldn’t have entered my mind.

A few weeks ago while walking my ageing whippet greyhound, my dog was attacked by a husky. I had to grab this dog by its collar, throwing the dog back while booting it hard in the ribs. The dog’s owner, a female, managed to get the dog under control. Then her partner proceeded to attack me for kicking their dog, saying, “you kick my dog!” Now I reckon my attacker was perhaps thirty years of age, and I am sure when he saw me, he thought, at fifty years of age. I was going to be a pushover.

Fortunately, this chap only knew how to attack someone by leading with his chin. I simply replied by leading with my straight left, hitting him repeatedly on the chin to soften him up a bit. He quickly had second thoughts, after smacking him half a dozen or so times, and finishing him with a swift kick to the balls.
Shortly afterwards, I had to explain my actions to the police. Nothing ever came of it, but it wasn’t what you expect when walking your dog to buy a fish supper. Oh and I lost my hat and my fish supper.

Unfortunately, as a cabby suffering violent attack is all too often accepted as being part and parcel of the job. It has almost become the norm. :-|

The culprits have been identified, apparently one of them broke his ankle after trying to jump from the moving cab. The cab's n/s passenger door was damaged as the culprit opened it as the driver was passing a pedestrian barrier and, a collision occured at this point.

He's got a problem, if these two concoct a story against him, and they stick to it. :-|

Very true Gary, corroboration is lacking on the driver's behalf. I know he works a radio circuit so, i'm puzzled as to his inability to activate the panic button thus, opening all mics to his situation. But, in his defence, he probably had his eye on the road

I know hitting the panic button should be the first thing you do, but if the argument escalated without warning. It's easy to get swept away in the emotion of the situation. You then think about what you should have done differently, given the chance again. :-|
