What's the point in going out there trying to do a honest nights graft when you've got base budgies up at the base when the work drops off? These people aren't seen on the ranks all night but when you see them on the road they've got a car full of passengers. We've got about 10 drivers who at the drop of a hat will be up at the base drinking tea and looking at the screen to see what work is in, when something good comes in you see cars disapearing off the screen in the plot where the base is.

It's really starting to f**k me off now, tonight I did one job in 2 hours I then thought f**K it and went and earnt it illegally in another district working the streets, £70 in 1½ hours. I know it's wrong but when it gets as bad as this you've got to earn your money.

I'm giving it another weekend then I'm going to say something.

The only way a board works is to share the work equally thats why round here they all want to be on my board and very few leave. I run drivers meeting up to 3 times a year any issues are thrashed out and if necessary we tweak the rules at the end of the day every driver has bills to pay so I don't allow cheating or drivers to see all the advanced bookings

last night we had a belter of a night I'm sure all my drivers had done over £100 by midnight (except me) I only drove up to 9 o'clock then did the phones from the office it was a very busy Saturday night

I would ask your boss to hold a drivers meeting to thrash out these issues if he refuses talk to some of the others and see if they are annoyed like you and threaten a MASS walkout

Are you completely dependent on this? Can you go it alone? I've never been on a company ever since I started out on my own (1990), as I know exactly what you are on about after working on a third for a company that allowed exactly that!!. I did two years and got out, bought my own second hand WAV, as there weren't any here then!! Worked hard, found my own clientele and have never looked back.... No dead mileage from bogus or no contact calls, had my old cab for 15 years, second one only 166000 on the clock in 8 years, now working just days as I don't need to work fecking nights anymore..... Get the budgies on their own, have a serious chat? Things will/might change for a while, but it will revert back before long. IMO go it alone (if you have the balls?) I'm sure you will be a lot better off.... :wink:

There's about 10 on our firm mate, they are all half rent night drivers so don't start until half 5 / 6 o clock, by 9pm they've been in the office 2-3 times tes drinking and looking over the base ops shoulder. The lads who are on full rent and are doing a double shift are run ragged on dead jobs doing a lump of mileage getting to the job only to find out it's been put in wrong.

Like I said last night when I was coming back from a dead job there were jobs waiting just round the corner from where I was, there were 3 cars in the office because it waaas showing up on the plots, I didn't get the job, 1 car in the office got the job. I travelled back to where the job was and yep you can guess, one of the base budgies was going for the job.

I have worked on my own for the past 10 years - and for me it is fine! Having said that the smaller Towns, Villages drivers etc have not got a cat in hells chance of making a living without a base to provide..........that is the problem - and not one that I would like.

It depends on your age and aspirations - I would if I were the right age be tempted by "London" - failing that I would set up as a one man band......advertising and a phone/pone number to suit. Whatever you do (again depending on your age)...............do not just accept the hand that you are dealt from this game.

I was on a base that served not just its own LA/town but also did a lot in the next town due to phone calls (obviously)

I was rebel (i know, hard to believe) anyone who misbehaved in anyway would get sent to sit on the LA border and listen to the work going out back at base, 1 night after 2 hours and £10 i drove back to the rank and started picking up (chucking out time), the base op kept calling me to see what was going on, eventually she walked up the rank to me and I handed her my radio....job done.

2 days later id got my own door signs and was on contract to the ambulance service plus doing the rank, plus an advert in the local paper, the other drivers kept asking how I was doing so I told em, much to the annoyance of my ex-boss who had words with me...

at the end of the day they have nothing except a phone and radios, without lambs to the slaughter (owners) they are stuffed

Nidge my sympathies mate ! what you outline so well must be soul destroying an honest bloke like you trying to earn an honest living supplying a vital service and being forced to watch the cretins and the greedy prostitute it, the me first shower so well represented on here unfortunately!!

Our new operators office will have no access for the drivers at all, they don't need access to the operators imo.
