Another story about iphone technology from a lazy ar$ed journalist who doesn't know the difference between taxis and private hire - let alone question the legality of the app in a private hire environment.

Top ten download success for local taxi company

A TAXI firm from Crosby are celebrating after their new app stormed into the iTunes App Store’s Top 100 travel category at number two.

Delta Taxis – based in Crosby for 40 years before moving to a hi-tech premises in Bootle in 2008 – released the app for iPhone and Android users back in November.

The app enables customers to order high priority taxis direct to the location of their handset.

Users are given the choice of entering their pick-up address manually through an “enter address” or “enter place of interest” option, or via the iHail function which uses the iPhone’s built-in GPS to determine their collection point.

In addition to knowing where a customer is, the app also enables users to track their taxi on their phone's map.

The new initiative has been particularly well received by the deaf and hard of hearing as users can manually enter their pick-up and destination details without having to talk to call centre staff or drivers.

A Delta spokesperson said: “We were quite shocked to be honest – those charts are usually reserved for the big boys like Virgin or National Rail.

“To see a homegrown Sefton business in there at No.2 makes us very proud.”

They added: “The coolest feature of the app is being able to see your Delta Taxi approaching on a real-time map so you can remain safe and warm indoors right up until the point your car arrives.”

Fare estimates are also available, yet people are reminded that this function acts as a guide, not a quotation.

The service also offers an email on approach to confirm the make, model, colour and registration number of the Delta Taxi so customers can feel assured that they are getting into the right vehicle.

The app has gone down well with users.

Commenting on Apple’s online forum, one said: “My favourite taxi firm just got better.”

The app's I've seen don't involve an operator - and you know the law.
