Ex-taxi chairman jailed for sword rampage at cops

A FORMER taxi association chairman was jailed this week for brandishing a samurai sword in public and threatening to kill two police officers.

Richard Hearn, 46, of no fixed address, roamed the streets of Witham declaring "someone is going to die," Chelmsford Crown Court heard on Tuesday.

The father-of-two and former chairman of the Braintree District Taxi Association, had been at his father's house in Witham on August 2. He left the house angrily after concerns were raised about his mental health.

Hearn, who was on bail for assaulting a police officer and breaking his nose one week earlier, armed himself with a samurai sword and demanded that two terrified women get out of their car, which they refused to do.

Still armed with the sword he then went back to his father's house where two police officers from the local neighbourhood team arrived.

Prosecuting, Samantha Lowther told the court that when police arrived he threatened to kill them and chased them away.

She said that police used repeated bursts of CS spray and their batons, but it failed to stop Hearn.

One officer ran to the police car and, as Hearn continued threatening to kill officers, another took refuge in a car he had flagged down.

The second officer then returned to the scene and, despite Hearn's claims that he was a black belt in martial arts and was still brandishing the sword, he arrested Hearn in Highfields Road.

Defending, Stephen Levy told the court that drink and depression had led him into a downward spiral.

Hearn, who admitted assault causing actual bodily harm, possessing cannabis, affray and possessing an offensive weapon, had also admitted two offences of assaulting police and driving while unfit.

Jailing him for two years, Recorder Alastair Wilson QC said: "Drink got the better of you."

Detective Constable Steven Walker said: "There is no doubt that our officers acted bravely in the face of the threats by this man with a sword, and feared that he would attack them. "

I have to say I'm not sure why you chose to make that comment after what I wrote but for the record I don't think it's funny when anybody murders anyone. I merely pointed out that there is little doubt left as to the mans sanity.
