Crackdown on taxi drivers flouting the law


Police in Honiton, Exmouth and Exeter have been cracking down a taxi drivers flouting the law during a two-day operation.

Five taxis cabs were stopped from being used during the operation, which saw officers join forces with VOSA (The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), immigration and HM Revenue and Customs Fuel Testing.

A total of 50 vehicles were stopped.

Of these 23 were found to be in order – 27 were committing offences ranging from defective lights, to the driver not having an identity badge.

Those which were prohibited from being used immediately had defects such as having a defective tyre, having a loose battery or failing to carry a first aid kit and fire extinguisher.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said, “Anyone who is a fare paying passenger should expect to be able to travel in safety.

“For the police to put vehicles off the road immediately demonstrates how seriously we treat breaches of the regulations but we will work hard to prevent the public being at risk.”

Police say further checks could take place in the future.

I think it's a bit harsh to take a vehicle off the road immediately because it didn't have a fire extinguisher or a first aid kit..... it's not like you should use them anyway

Hardly, we asked our local fire brigade what we should do in the event of a fire - they said get as far away from the cab as possible and call them which kind of makes the carrying of a fire extinguisher a bit of a waste of time.

Likewise with the first aid kit - which is only carried under the health and safety act for the drivers own use.

You don't use a fire extinguisher on them. You could cause them more injuries like that.
If a person is on fire you should use a coat or blanket or any other suitable item and smother the fire. If they are out of the vehicle you should wrap them in the coat or blanket and roll them on the ground.
At least that is what I was taught in the Scouts.

All the more reason not to leave fire extinguishers in the hands of the untrained, same goes with first aid if you don't know what you're doing it's best to do nowt other than ring the emergency services

The first aid kit is for ones own personal use, you are not permitted to give first aid to passengers you may however lend it to a medically trained person

I hope I'm never in your cab and get injured.

I think what Skippy is trying to say is it's not advisable to give first aid if you aren't trained, you could do more damage than good.
