"One in seven fares prior to the trial resulted in an incident - whether that was verbal abuse, threats of violence, physical assault, a dispute over the fare, people running off without paying or damage to the taxi.”

I'd be interested in knowing where these figures came from.

A study.

They issued a certain number of free CCTV and compared incidents logged before and after.

Would all the information collected be available for public comparison?

The original article from years back is on here somewhere, but if you did a FoI they would have to give you all the evidence they have.

Another option could be lone worker devices. I work for a company in Sheffield that manufactures and supplies such devices. They can be paid for through a monthly contract - like a mobile phone - or outright for a fraction of the cost of many CCTV cameras.

The device is discreet and allows users to discreetly raise an alarm through a button on the back of the device. The device is styled as an ID badge and when an alert is activated, connects directly to an Alarm Receiving Centre who can listen in to the situation and escalate to a Police response if necessary. There is also an option of camera integrated device too which will stream live video to the Alarm Receiving Centre, so will not only capture and record evidence, but will also help Police with an informed response to situations.

I already have a device, it is called a mobile phone. Guess what? When I ring the police they never turn up.

Would the GMB oppose the idea if the council were funding it 100%?

I'm a london bus driver now, and we have cctv fitted in all out buses, and it has beeen a godsend.

If I was driving full time for a living, I would want cctv fitted in my cab.

I can't see what their problem is, if they've got nothing to hide then I can't see a problem. They obviously don't want the Council listening into what they say to the punters if anything goes wrong.

I would like cctv in my cab but, have'nt got the dosh. What Im really concerned about is will anybody (authorities) punish anybody, will they even go after a runner seeing that they have no manpower available?.CCTV everywhere does not seem to deter thieves, druggies, etc.

The cheap ones say HD, they are not. They record sound and have a good enough picture recording to identify faces when pointed into the cab, infrared lights on the cam help with that at night time.
Amazon list below and the camera I use below that. Cheap and simple, just add an SD card, carry a spare SD card too.

Wow, at them prices (less than £20) you could get two, one front facing and the other in-car. Might be rubbish but cheap enough to be better than nothing at all.

Whats the battery life like on them Fanny ?
