Hello one and all,

I am a relatively new owner (about 6 months) of a 1996 Fairway Driver N reg and firstly would like to thank this great forum for providing invaluable tips. I have encountered a lot of the usual problems associated with the FX4 (blocked heater pipe causing water dumping into footwells, leaking front and back windows and seals, water dribbling onto fusebox) and I am slowly working my way through the list. Engine wise it has all been good and a real pleasure to drive ( I am down south where black cabs are less common so it gets a lot of smiles and waves!)

I have a friends wedding coming up where 'Percy' will be the main wedding transport, so I am frantically trying to get him up to shape.

The bit I am dreading is that the Power Steering fluid is leaking fairly quickly now, and don't want him sat outside the registry office in the 'ceremonial' parking space bleeding away!

The power steering started grinding - I checked the levels and it was low so after googling around bought some Dextron III which fixed the problem. But it is still leaking.

Had a look under (I am not a very experienced car buff) and it seems the liquid is coming out from the bottom of the power steering unit at a very large nut - possibly a seal has corroded? A fairly large metal spacer/washer seems to be bent into an irregular shape - I tried reshaping it but this only slightly slowed the leak. There also seems to be some liquid leaking from one of two pipes in a similar area (are these to do with the braking? I dont know).

I would be so grateful for any advice on this issue - I am guessing like much of the Fairway stuff it is a common fault. I swear I read somewhere about a fairly straightforward fix but can't find it anywhere.

So how would I go about fixing this? What parts do I or might I need? Who is good to go and see if necessary? I am guessing it may be a model specific part so not something regular Joe garage can sort?

I look forward to hearing any advice.

(Next up sort out the leaking boot - getting the back seats out and talcum powder everywhere LOL)

The steering box leak is fairly common,so its either buy a new/recon one or atempt to fit new seals.Which is all a recon box probally is.The two pipes are from the power steering pump not brakes. You could allways try one of those fluids that are meant to stop leaks before changing. On a different note how the feck did you stop the leak in windsreen !!!

LOL - bought new windscreen, new rubber, rub down all rust and add rust treatment, some small welding, a ton of sealant. No magic solution just far too much frustration and time spent!

If I was to fit new seals any idea where I can get these affordably, or even where I could get a recon/new steering box?

Thanks

The washer you have straightened is meant to be like that,it locks the large nut that stops the steering arm falling off.
The seals are easy enough to do,on mine the hardest part was digging out the circlip that holds it in,some twerp had been there before and broken the ends off.

Thanks everyone for all your advice! Think I will go with the seal kit.

I never claimed the windscreen was entirely fixed, just to a point where it is no longer a bother, as it is now only a tiny dribble in the most heavy downpours.

I think 'my list of problems and working through them' , is probably not as accurate as saying ' a list of problems I currently know about, and working through them.."

Fairways don't have problems, just character features...

Probably a good idea,in a few years time the price will go up.Even the most horrible cars can become classics as they get rarer and older.Allegros, marinas and vauxhall vivas, once ten a penny, now fetching more than ever.

Years ago I had an absolutely mint Mk1 three litre capri.I sold it to buy what turned out to be the rustiest XJS in the known world.
I still regret it,more so every time I see what those capris fetch these days.
