Huntingdon taxi driver fined for smokingSmoking in his taxi has proved expensive for driver Kevin Mercer who has been ordered to pay more than £400 in a fine and costs.
Magistrates at Huntingdon heard that it was the third time Mercer, who works for Steve’s Taxis, had been spotted smoking by an officer from Huntingdonshire District Council.
Mercer, of Blenheim Court, Mere Way, Wyton, made no attempt to contact the court and did not attend on the day.
The council had already sent him a fixed penalty ticket and a reminder, but he did not reply to either.
He was found guilty of smoking in a smoke-free vehicle in his absence and was fined £100, ordered to pay £300 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
The court heard he was seen smoking on 28 June last year and has also been spotted smoking in the cab earlier in 2012 and 2010.
Cllr Tom Sanderson, executive councillor for healthy and active communities, said: “By smoking in his taxi Mr Mercer shows not only to break the law, but denied his customers their rights to travel in a smoke-free vehicle.
“The council is committed to protecting the health of the local community and flagrant breaches of public health legislation will not be tolerated.”
