Taxi driver slams pothole repair jobs

Image
Taxi driver Jennifer Wright is unhappy at the state of the roads in Monklands.

Monklands’ pothole problem shows no sign of letting up - even when ‘repairs’ are carried out.

Airdrie taxi driver Jennifer Wright brought two blackspots in Coatbridge to the Advertiser’s attention, and ridiculed the council’s response to her complaints.

Cairnhill woman Jennifer reported the holes in Hillcrest Avenue and Woodside Street a couple of weeks ago.

She said: “I phoned the council on Tuesday, February 19, reporting the holes but they are still as bad a few days later.

“They could have caused a lot of damage, particularly on Hillcrest Avenue as you have to turn round a corner and can’t avoid the hole.”

When the Advertiser went to meet with Jennifer late last week, the hole at Hillcrest Avenue had been filled in. But Jennifer slammed the standard of the repair job.

She said: “This is clearly just a quick fix, a patch-up job, and the hole is starting to sink again already.

“Goodness knows what standard the road will be in if we get hit with any bad weather.”

Jennifer says her fellow taxi drivers, like her, are “sick to death” of the amount of potholes in Monklands.

She said: “There are no roads in Coatbridge, in particular, that I would say are safe to drive on.

“And every taxi driver I speak to is saying the same thing, the anger is widespread.

“We are obviously out on the roads constantly and it’s shocking to have to deal with the amount of holes.

“I’ve only had my car a year and you can hear it rattling already because of going over potholes galore.

“It has got to the stage when any time I see a hole on a road in the area, I phone up the council as something has to be done.

“We pay enough to the council and don’t ask a lot for them in return to keep the roads in a good state.”

A frustrated Jennifer added: “I do not know where the council tax and road tax that we pay goes.

“It seems all we pay for is to get our bins emptied once a week.

“If the council paid a bit more attention to the roads instead of spending money on all of the local parks, we’d maybe get somewhere.”

North Lanarkshire Council claim they have dealt with the holes highlighted by Jennifer – and continue to call on Monklands motorists for help to deal with potholes. David Smart, business manager of roads operations, said: “The pothole at the junction of Mitchell Street and Woodside Street was reported on Tuesday, February 19.

“An inspection was carried out the next day and our contractor Amey made this hole and various others safe on Mitchell Street on Thursday, February 21.

“We were already aware of the defects at the bottom of Hillcrest Avenue when it was reported on Monday, February 18.

“However, an inspection had shown they were considered not dangerous.

“Temporary repairs to prevent any further deterioration will be carried out as soon as possible.

“We monitor the condition of the roads network and carry out a rolling programme of repairs but we welcome reports from the public on any road faults to allow us to address any problems promptly.”

That repair job they've done there will be as bad once it's rained then froze, it'll split the tarmac resulting in the pothole becoming bigger.

They should have cut the whole damaged area out making clean edges including the damaged Tarmac you can see then removed the old Tarmac and replaced it with new, roll it down and seal the edges with bitumen, job done. Repair it like that and you'll have no other problems with that pothole again.
